Presidents Cup: USA thrash Internationals 5-0 in opening session

Team USA race into a commanding 5-0 lead as they close in on a 10th consecutive victory over the Internationals at the Presidents Cup.

Jim Furyk's United States surged into a commanding 5-0 lead over Mike Weir's Internationals following the opening fourballs session on Thursday.

The Presidents Cup, a biennial contest hosted by the PGA Tour, has been held on 14 occasions and Team USA own a dominant 12-1-1 record.

You have to go all the way back to 1998 in Australia for the last and only time the International team won the Cup.

The 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal in Canada already looks over, even if there are 25 more points available this week.

A total of 15.5 points will be enough to win the Presidents Cup.

Furyk's defending champions swept the first-day fourballs 5-0 with wins for Xander Schauffele & Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa & Sahith Theegala, Scottie Scheffler & Russell Henley, Wyndham Clark & Keegan Bradley, and Patrick Cantlay & Sam Burns.

It marked the fourth time in Presidents Cup history that a team had swept the first session 5-0.

Scheffler and Tom Kim were locked in a fiery and frosty exchange on the front nine, but the World No.1 said it 'was just a bit of fun'.

Commentator Paul McGinley labelled Kim's actions 'bad behaviour' and 'disrespectful'.

Five foursomes matches will now take place on Friday, and Weir's Internationals will need a response.

Four fourballs and four foursomes matches will take place on Saturday, with 12 singles matches on Sunday.

Welcome to LIVE updates!

Welcome GolfMagic Readers to LIVE day one updates from the opening fourballs session at the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal GC in Canada.

The Internationals have just about had enough of this biennial contest having been dominated by the United States through the years.

Team USA own a dominant 12-1-1 record, and they are seeking a 10th straight victory this week.

You have to go all the way back to 1998 in Australia for the last and only time the International team won the Cup.

The spoils were shared in South Africa in 2003 when Ernie Els and Tiger Woods could not be separated in extra holes.

The bookies have USA at heavy 2/5 favourites for the win this week, with the Internationals are 11/4.

A tie is available at 16/1.
