Presidents Cup: USA thrash Internationals 5-0 in opening session

Team USA race into a commanding 5-0 lead as they close in on a 10th consecutive victory over the Internationals at the Presidents Cup.

Jim Furyk's United States surged into a commanding 5-0 lead over Mike Weir's Internationals following the opening fourballs session on Thursday.

The Presidents Cup, a biennial contest hosted by the PGA Tour, has been held on 14 occasions and Team USA own a dominant 12-1-1 record.

You have to go all the way back to 1998 in Australia for the last and only time the International team won the Cup.

The 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal in Canada already looks over, even if there are 25 more points available this week.

A total of 15.5 points will be enough to win the Presidents Cup.

Furyk's defending champions swept the first-day fourballs 5-0 with wins for Xander Schauffele & Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa & Sahith Theegala, Scottie Scheffler & Russell Henley, Wyndham Clark & Keegan Bradley, and Patrick Cantlay & Sam Burns.

It marked the fourth time in Presidents Cup history that a team had swept the first session 5-0.

Scheffler and Tom Kim were locked in a fiery and frosty exchange on the front nine, but the World No.1 said it 'was just a bit of fun'.

Commentator Paul McGinley labelled Kim's actions 'bad behaviour' and 'disrespectful'.

Five foursomes matches will now take place on Friday, and Weir's Internationals will need a response.

Four fourballs and four foursomes matches will take place on Saturday, with 12 singles matches on Sunday.

Cantlay is dialled

Patrick Cantlay is the only player in the group to hit the green at the par-3 fifth.

The pin is tucked 233 yards away in the back right of the green.

Cantlay sends a towering effort towards the pin, and it's a beauty.

He has about seven feet for birdie.

Advantage USA.

Morikawa strikes

What a turnaround.

Collin Morikawa converts his birdie putt at the par-3 seventh, piling the pressure on Adam Scott to convert from inside 10 feet for the half.

Scott's effort drifts by the left edge and Morikawa marches off to the next tee.

All square in the second match!

18:51
Lovely stuff from Adam Scott

Just superb from the Aussie at the par-3 seventh.

The former Masters champion has about six feet for birdie coming up.

Morikawa has about 12 feet for birdie...

18:49
It's not often you see this from Hideki Matsuyama...
18:47
More red on the leaderboard

Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau take the advantage over Ben An and Jason Day on the eighth hole.

Team USA have all of the momentum right now, leading three of the five matches.

18:43
Lee and Scott take the lead

The opening match remains all square after seven holes but the second match is going the way of the International duo of Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee right now.

Lee and Scott put some orange on the leaderboard at the sixth hole.

Birdies for Schauffele and Ben An

The top match remains all square after Xander Schauffele and Ben An make birdie on the par-5 sixth.

18:29
Pars all around

Scottie Scheffler has an outside chance for birdie at the fourth but he misses.

Still, the U.S. side retain their slender advantage and are off to the fifth.

18:22
We've seen this before...

Huge pressure on Patrick Cantlay at the second hole.

Matsuyama and Conners are both in tight and it's a gimme birdie for the International duo.

Cantlay has 11ft to stay one down... and he buries it.

We saw that composure last September.

Seems like Cantlay, with or without a hat, is just as dangerous...

Match 5 underway

Thanks for the updates, Andy.

Ben here ready to take you through the next couple of hours so depending where you are grab a coffee or a beer.

Match 5 has just got underway.

Patrick Cantlay has missed the fairway, but Sam Burns bails him out.

What can Hideki Matsuyama and Corey Conners do?

Both miss the short stuff...

Tom Kim gives it large

Tom Kim gives it the biggun on the first tee, then send his tee shot way right into the trees.

17:09
Big five mins for USA

Huge five-minute period for USA.

Schauffele stiffs his approach on the par-4 2nd to set up a simple birdie that wins the hole.

It brings Match 1 back to a tie.

Morikawa then bins a 20-footer for birdie at the par-4 1st to move USA into an early lead.

Weir, Furyk quick quotes

"Just pride, super excited to the watch guys play now," said Weir.

On choosing fourballs first, he added: "Traditionaly stronger in fourball, want to get the crowd going and get more comfort."

Furyk said: "These events are a lot about momentum. Five game series, nice to get off a fast start. That's the goal for both teams."

On the message he's sent out to his team on Thursday, he added: "Be yourself, play loose, play free. We want to apply the pressure."
