Justin Thomas has recounted a time at the 2019 Presidents Cup when Tiger Woods swore at him to keep things simple over a tee shot.

Thomas, speaking on The Smylie Show, threw it back five years to tell a hilarious conversation he had with the 15-time major champion during their Friday foursomes match against Hideki Matsuyama and Ben An.

The moment came on the tee at the par-4 16th at Royal Melbourne in Australia.

"It was in the alternate shot, and I just made like an eight-footer for birdie to stay tied in the match," Thomas told former PGA Tour pro Smylie Kaufman.

"We were in a really good match.

"So I had 16 tee shot, and it's this brutal hole.

"It's this very narrow dog-leg left, and it just gradually dog legs the whole way, and I like to fade the ball off the tee, and there's this damn tree that's right off of the tee on the left that's just right in my window... it's a big point in the match. I need to get this ball in play."

Thomas continued: "I have the greatest iron player on planet earth on my team, but it's such a long hole, I can't hit an iron because it's like a driver/5-iron kind of par-4, and I never really ask Tiger anything in terms of layups or whatever it is, and that's what makes him such a great partner.

"He's just like, 'look, you go play, I'll go play, I'll let you know if I need anything'.

"I call Tiger over. He's like, 'What? ' I'm like, 'I mean, is there anything, like, this tee shot's not very comfortable for me. Like, do you care if you're further back or..."

Woods replied: "I don't care what I have in, just put me in the ------- fairway."

Thomas continued: "I was like, 'Okay, that doesn't make it any easier, but I appreciate it, partner.

"So I just teed down a low driver and hit like a little junior draw, and somehow hit the fairway... I'll never forget that."

Thomas and Woods went on to defeat Matsuyama and An 1up.

Team USA then went on to win 16-14.

Thomas took 3.5 points from five, while Woods went undefeated 3-0.

It marked an eighth consecutive win for USA at the time.

The stars and stripes have since gone on to win both the 2022 and 2024 matches at the Presidents Cup.

Jim Furyk's Team USA comfortably saw off Mike Weir's Internationals last week at Royal Montreal in Canada by a scoreline of 18.5-11.5.

Thomas did not make the 2024 team.

While disappointed to have missed out on fourth straight Presidents Cup team, Thomas admitted he did sit down to watch his peers win the Cup for a 10th time in a row.

The Presidents Cup is run by the PGA Tour and so all LIV Golf players are ineligible to compete in the biennial contest.
