G/FORE has really been making a play over the last few years in our sport, releasing some of the most boldest, colourful and loudest golf shoes on the market. The brand has brought some much-needed fresh air to a cluttered market space of late, and thankfully it's stuck to its mantra with the release of its MG4+ 02 G/Lock golf shoes.
A number of brands across the globe have tried to muse over a vision of art, architecture and high-end fashion, and it's fair to say many have failed. But not in the case of G/FORE.
Now I've always been intrigued by the G/FORE brand and most importantly its shoes, so I was very happy when I got the chance to review the new MG4+ O2/LOCK golf shoes, which launched to the market ahead of The Masters.
My latest testing session would prove to be a defining cherry-popping moment as I had never tested a pair of G/FORE shoes before, so I was finally happy to have my Cinderella moment and I’ll say it from the outset, this really was the happy ending and I did go to the ball.
To see how these golf shoes performed, I took them to Crosland Heath Golf Club for a couple of days testing. I thought this would be the perfect testing ground for them since it’s hilly, dry, windy and set on top of a quarry, which provided plenty of different terrains to really give these shoes a thorough spin.
Let's take a closer at them...

G/FORE MG4+ O2 G/LOCK: First Looks
I must admit, straight out the box I was a little underwhelmed. Now before you go ahhhhh, that doesn’t fit with what you’ve just told me (just HOLD a little...), let me provide you with some more context.
G/FORE is a very colourful brand and on opening my parcel I came across a colourfully inspired Piet Mondrian-styled shoe box (Google him, some excellent work). I was fully expecting this to bleed into the golf shoe itself, but instead I was delivered something entirely different. On first glance, I thought it was slightly beige. I'm personally a white and pastel coloured shoe merchant so it definitely took a bit of adjustment time.
Once adjustment time had ceased (one cup of coffee and a dog walk, in case you care), I came back to my box and opened them up again, giving them the full 360-degree tour of my kitchen fashion runway.
Now back to the beige, I had actually been sent the twilight colourway edition. To those not au fait with a colour chart or marketing jargon, this is basically navy and white (which i’m not usually a fan of, as you probably can tell by my sarcasm). However, after some eye readjustment it had some very subtle but fitting electric blue touches around the outer sole and back of the shoe. After some time, these elements were actually really starting to do something for me, much to my surprise and possibly yours by now. I was also pleased to see when taking a closer at the entire range on the G/FORE website that there was a plethora of colourway options to suit all personal preferences, and so I was once again back in the ‘I can see what G/FORE is all about again’ camp after my first musings.
The more and more I look at these shoes and spend time around them, I find them really attractive. They bring modern design and meticulous attention to detail. You can also tell without even putting them on your feet that these are definitely some of the best golf shoes on the market. They just ooze premium feel and a touch of class. But this is something we have always said when it comes to G/FORE products, whether it's shoes or bags.

G/FORE MG4+ O2 G/LOCK: Performance
After being quickly converted on the looks of these shoes, I then took them onto the course.
The outsole of the G/FORE MG4+ O2/LOCK is designed to offer optimal stability throughout the golf swing, providing a solid foundation via the external heel counter, while the custom-designed insole enhances comfort and support underfoot. That being said, on first wear, I had never experienced G/FORE insoles before of which the brand boasts as ‘having advanced midsole technology delivering exceptional cushioning and energy return, keeping your feet comfortable and energized’.
With lots of talk around the midsole, it felt somewhat alien to me when I first slipped them on. I didn’t like it to be honest, it felt weird, akin to a pair of grip socks that you may have been fortunate or unfortunate to have tried on when taking your kids to a trampoline park. However, after 100 yards or so of pacing out in the golf club car park, I was amazed to discover it really works. In fact, I felt so much more stable in the shoe. For someone that struggles with oddly sized feet, you really feel locked into the shoe and so comfortable. I really cannot emphasise that enough after two days worth of testing. I genuinely didn’t feel any tiredness or pressure points on my feet whatsoever, and that is a first I can assure you.
I really put these golf shoes through their paces during my two days of testing since my golf was bad. Very bad in fact, but that is great for a golf shoes review because I was doing so much walking, and so I was able to test their durability to the max. I spent two days wearing these shoes and testing them out of the rough, bunkers, woodland, streams, hard terrain, bogey marshland. You name it, I was there, and they really came out on top no matter where I was hacking away at my ball. Not once did I feel I lost any stability or traction on my shots, and that is key with any golf shoe with test here at GolfMagic.
These G/FORE golf shoes also felt extremely light but exceptionally sturdy at the same time. I can assure you that you will feel confident in the larger outsole and the traction pattern to deliver the grip you need across various different terrains, and nor will you experience any performance drop-offs when the heavens open. The MG4+ O2 G/Locks are just an incredibly solid pair of golf shoes, and most importantly they will keep your feet dry thanks to their premium waterproof TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) material. I really appreciated the shoe's slightly higher back and fully padded mesh interior lining because it ensured no water made its way into the shoes when the rain did pour down for a good half hour. A big tick there.

My biggest takeaways from my two days of testing these shoes lie in their comfort, dryness and the fact they made me feel grounded when I hit the ball, which is something I love when it comes to a pair of golf shoes. The traction, as I say, is as good as it gets for a premium golf shoe model.
Another area that is often neglected by some golfers is how easy it is to keep a pair of golf shoes clean, so I wanted to check this out as soon as I got home. I immediately whipped out my £1 ALDI sponge wash, yes, we can all pretend we will keep our golf shoes gleamingly clean using professional sponges - and god knows whatever packs you can get off Amazon or Temu these days - but reality is when you get home, you grab the first thing available and mine is the ALDI sponge. I am pleased to report my G/FORE shoes passed the test with flying colours. All mud residue, water marks and grass came straight off and left me with a pretty brand new looking shoe, which should be expected for a price point of £185.
Another thing I was mightily impressed with was the shoe's auxetic midsole. Typically when white, these tend to stain very quickly but there was not a mark. I’ve worn countless other brands with a similar feature and even after nine holes have seen some form of grass bleeding into the texture. But there were no issues here, and so another hat tip in the direction of G/FORE.
And finally, do the G/FORE MG4+ 02/LOCK golf shoes stand the fashion test? After all, this is something we have to seriously consider since consumers are buying more shoes based on aesthetics than anything else irrespective of what it does or doesn’t do on the course. So as we enter a new dawn of fashion first golfers, we have to be mindful of this, and in my eyes they pass the test without any doubt. These shoes look good with chinos, shorts, skinny fit jeggings (or whatever you want to call them) etc, and they are perfectly balanced to be used on course and off course. You possibly won't want to wear them down the pub since it’s not often you wear soft spikes out on the town, but in terms of launches of golf shoes for 2025, these stand up there for me as one of the very best out there. I believe they cater for every type of golfer from your traditionalist to your new wave.
Should you purchase the G/FORE MG4+ O2 G/LOCK golf shoes?
Simply put, yes. I could honestly wax lyrical about these shoes for days. The G/FORE MG4+ O2/Lock shoes are slightly pricey, but you really do get value for what you pay here. These shoes offer unbelievable comfort and stability on the course, and I'll go as far to say they could possibly be my favourite pair of golf shoes for the year ahead. Very much a 5/5 golf shoe and we highly recommend them here at GolfMagic.
