LIV Golf has dropped an outrageous bombshell on the eve of its final regular season event in Chicago by confirming its player captains are no longer exempt from facing relegation

It had been widely assumed that all player captains would avoid being booted out of the league even if they found themselves in the drop zone come the end of this week's Chicago tournament.

At the top of the standings, it's very much happy days for two player captains in Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann who will fight out individual championship honours at Bolingbrook Golf Club this week.

But for one player captain in Bubba Watson, his week in Chicago just got a whole lot more stressful following today's shock update.

That's because the two-time Masters champion ranks 52nd in the LIV Golf Leaague standings and inside the drop zone.

Initially everyone thought that meant Watson was safe from the boot.

But that is no longer the case...

According to @TeeTimesPub - formerly @LIVGolfUpdates - all captains on LIV Golf are no longer exempt from relegation this season.

Captains Phil Mickelson (44th) and Ian Poulter (46th) will also now be looking over their shoulders after today's news as neither of them are currently safe for a place on the circuit in 2025.

Should any of the player captains end up in the drop zone come Sunday night in Chicago, it would then be down to LIV Golf bosses and CEO Greg Norman as to whether they would be invited back.

Flushing It tweeted:

'The LIV Golf League is today announcing that all captains are eligible for relegation, including Bubba Watson, who is currently inside the ‘Drop Zone’.

'This will add a lot of drama to the Individual Championship and is a huge decision to make ahead of the final event of the season.'

To our knowledge here at GolfMagic, a number of LIV Golf captains and players were signed to three-year deals on the circuit.

That means a number of their contracts come to an end this month.

Despite today's update on player captains now facing the axe, it is understood LIV Golf wildcard Anthony Kim will avoid being relegated.

Kim looks on from 56th out of 57 players in the LIV Golf League standings ahead of Chicago.

Whether or not Kim remains part of LIV Golf in 2025 remains to be seen, but given the attention and buzz the former US Ryder Cup hero has created since joining the league you would have to believe he is very much part of Norman's plans moving forwards.

Kim admitted to turning down a number of sponsors following his move to LIV Golf.

The 2024 LIV Golf season will officially conclude next week at the season-ending Team Championship in Dallas.

Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC will bid to defend their team title, but they will certainly have their work cut out against the likes of Rahm's Legion XIII and Brooks Koepka's Smash GC.
