Angry Scottie Scheffler smashes club into turf during second round at RBC Heritage

PGA Tour superstar Scottie Scheffler was seen losing his temper and hurling his club into the turf during the second round at the RBC Heritage.

Scheffler, 28, tried to draw his ball around a tall tree with his approach shot into the par-4 8th at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island.

But his ball caught the trees and ended up coming down into the bunker down the left flank some 60 yards short of the green.

As a stroppy Scheffler went to pass his club back to caddie Ted Scott, he decided to keep hold of it and then smash it into the first cut of rough.

Scheffler went on to make a bogey to move back to level par for his round at the time. 

A lot of critics have been quick to point out recently that for whatever reason Scheffler seems a lot more hot-headed and affected by poor shots this season.

Scheffler dusted himself down as he boarded the next tee and he went on to make a birdie on the short par-4 9th. 

He went on to card 1-under 70 to move to 8-under par for the tournament. 

That sees him lie four shots behind Justin Thomas heading into the third round. 

World No.1 Scheffler is looking to become the first player to successfully defend the RBC Heritage since Boo Weekley in 2008.

This week's RBC Heritage marks the fifth of eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour this season.

As a result it comes with a huge $20m prize fund with $3.6m going to the winner. 

Scheffler is looking to win his first title on the PGA Tour this season.

He finished solo fourth in his title defence at The Masters last week.

Scheffler was forced to miss the first few weeks of the 2025 season as a result of a hand injury on Christmas Day. 

He sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass and he had to undergo surgery.

That very much set him back in his tracks to continue where he left off in 2024. 

Scheffler incredibly won seven official titles on the PGA Tour last season and nine in total including a first Olympic gold medal in Paris. 

The two-time Masters champion still remains clear at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

But World No.2 Rory McIlroy is closing the gap, especially after winning The Masters to complete the career grand slam last week.

The gap is now less than 3 points. 

Scheffler this week moved past Dustin Johnson for most weeks (136) as World No.1. 

That is third in the all-time list behind Greg Norman in second (331) and Tiger Woods (683).
