Tiger Woods opens with 1-over 73 at Masters
Woods keeps himself in contention despite not firing on all cylinders at Augusta.
It wasn't exactly vintage Tiger Woods on day one of the 2018 Masters, but a 1-over 73 has more than kept the former world number one's chances of a 15th major alive.
Woods currently lies five strokes off the pace and just inside the top 30 as things stand on day one at Augusta National.
The 14-time major champion got off on the front foot with a birdie at the short par-4 third but then posted consecutive bogeys at the fourth and fifth to go out in 37 shots.
Woods added further bogeys at 11 and 12 to fall back to 3-over but bounced back well on the closing holes with birdies at the 14th and 16th.
Once unthinkable, the par 5s proved to be Woods’ kryptonite, playing the four holes in even par. He smoked tee shots on the second and eighth but failed to make birdie, and then drove it right on 13 and 15 to force lay-ups to the green.
Looking at Woods' stats on day one, he found 11 of 18 greens and eight of 14 fairways - following a last-minute switch in driver shaft. He also made 28 putts.
