Presidents Cup: USA thrash Internationals 5-0 in opening session

Team USA race into a commanding 5-0 lead as they close in on a 10th consecutive victory over the Internationals at the Presidents Cup.

Jim Furyk's United States surged into a commanding 5-0 lead over Mike Weir's Internationals following the opening fourballs session on Thursday.

The Presidents Cup, a biennial contest hosted by the PGA Tour, has been held on 14 occasions and Team USA own a dominant 12-1-1 record.

You have to go all the way back to 1998 in Australia for the last and only time the International team won the Cup.

The 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal in Canada already looks over, even if there are 25 more points available this week.

A total of 15.5 points will be enough to win the Presidents Cup.

Furyk's defending champions swept the first-day fourballs 5-0 with wins for Xander Schauffele & Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa & Sahith Theegala, Scottie Scheffler & Russell Henley, Wyndham Clark & Keegan Bradley, and Patrick Cantlay & Sam Burns.

It marked the fourth time in Presidents Cup history that a team had swept the first session 5-0.

Scheffler and Tom Kim were locked in a fiery and frosty exchange on the front nine, but the World No.1 said it 'was just a bit of fun'.

Commentator Paul McGinley labelled Kim's actions 'bad behaviour' and 'disrespectful'.

Five foursomes matches will now take place on Friday, and Weir's Internationals will need a response.

Four fourballs and four foursomes matches will take place on Saturday, with 12 singles matches on Sunday.

Kim is fired up

Tom Kim is on fire at the moment.

He's just made another long one, this time from 24 feet, for birdie at the par-4 eighth.

Scottie Scheffler doesn't even look at Kim as he grabs the South Korean's golf ball out of the cup.

Kim and Sunjae Im march off to the next tee box before Scheffler even putts.

This will undoubtedly be a flashpoint...

Scheffler misses, and now Kim and Im are only down by one.

19:21
Big putt from Schauffele

Team USA now lead by two in two matches, courtesy of Xander Schauffele.

Jason Day is first to go for birdie on the 10th green, but from 26 feet he cannot convert.

Schauffele, meanwhile, has a fairly straight putt up the hill.

His effort catches the left centre and now things are looking very poor for the International side.

They need something to happen now...

19:15
Here's that reaction from Scheffler
19:14
Cantlay converts

No Hat Pat strokes home his birdie putt at the fifth.

Cantlay and Burns are now all square against Hideki Matsuyama and Corey Conners.

19:12
Scott birdie

Adam Scott birdies the eighth to pile the pressure on Collin Morikawa.

Morikawa has been playing some superb stuff this year and he already looks more settled than when he appeared in the 2023 Ryder Cup.

He can't convert his birdie putt, though, and Min Woo Lee and the former Masters champ take the lead.

19:10
Scottie Scheffler goes bananas

Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim trade blows at the sixth.

First Kim steps up and drains a bomb for birdie, and boy was he fired up.

How will Scheffler respond? By jarring a bomb of his own.

He turns to Kim and bellows: "What was that? Huh?!"

Team USA still up by two in the third match...

19:06
Opening match reaches the turn

Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau head to the back nine leading by one over Jason Day and Ben An.
