Rory McIlroy makes Scottie Scheffler claim ahead of AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am final round
PGA Tour superstar Rory McIlroy admits he wants to turn into Scottie Scheffler this season as he goes in search of a first title at Pebble Beach.
Rory McIlroy has revealed he wants to "be a little more like Scottie Scheffler" this season as he goes in search of capturing a first PGA Tour title at Pebble Beach on Sunday.
McIlroy, 35, fired his lowest career round on the famed Californian course with a 7-under 65 on Saturday.
It vaulted the World No.3 into a tie for second place alongside his good friend Shane Lowry, who also shot a 65 in the third round.
McIlroy and Lowry will now join 54-hole leader and recent American Express champion Sepp Straka in the final round.
Straka, who is battling flu symptoms this week, leads his fellow European Ryder Cup teammates by one shot heading into the final 18.

But back to the top of the story and McIlroy has admitted he wants to start turning into Scheffler, not ust in terms of winning more regularly on the PGA Tour but by limiting his mistakes on the golf course, something the runaway World No.1 typically does very well.
"Yeah, look, I played well. I didn't make any mistakes," said McIlroy when reflecting on his flawless third round of 65.
"One of the things I really -- I want to do this year is try to limit my mistakes and play bogey free.
"Three of my last four rounds have been that way, last round in Dubai, first round here and now this round.
"Just really try to limit the mistakes and play smart golf and be a little more like Scottie Scheffler basically."
Scheffler, who won nine times worldwide including The Masters in 2024, lies six shots off the pace heading into the final round at Pebble Beach.
Both Scheffler and McIlroy are making their first starts of the PGA Tour season this week.
They are also both looking to land a first PGA Tour title at famed Pebble Beach.

McIlroy has already enjoyed a memorable week no matter what happens on Sunday.
That's because he made a slam dunk hole-in-one during the first round at Spyglass Hill.
It marked his third career ace as a professional and second on the PGA Tour.
This week's event is a Signature Event on the PGA Tour with a huge $20m prize purse where $3.6m goes to the winner.
