PGA Tour Betting Tips: How is Jason Day 28/1 to win the Farmers Insurance Open?!

GolfMagic Editor Andy Roberts provides his best bets for the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open at famed Torrey Pines.

The Farmers Insurance Open field may have cut up badly with a number of high-profile withdrawals, but while that's a big blow to the PGA Tour and its fans it does make finding this week's winner a little easier at famed Torrey Pines.

World No.2 Xander Schauffele and World No.5 Collin Morikawa have both removed their names from the field, and other notable names such as Akshay Bhatia, Mackenzie Hughes, Nicolai Hojgaard and Harry Hall have also decided to WD.

The somewhat depleted star-quality field now leaves European Ryder Cup hero Ludvig Aberg as the pre-tournament favourite, narrowly ahead of recent Sentry champion Hideki Matsuyama.

While I do like the chances of one of those players at Torrey Pines, I really fancy a former two-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open at odds of 28/1 to get the job done this week.

The Farmers Insurance Open is staged over two different courses over the first two rounds - the tougher South Course and easier North Course.

Those players making the cut then compete over the South Course over the final two rounds.

Please note this tournament starts on Wednesday 22 January.

PGA Tour Golf Betting Tips: Farmers Insurance Open

Tip 1: Jason Day - 28/1

I have absolutely no idea why Jason Day is a best odds 28/1 ahead of the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open.

It really does seem a huge price for someone who is not only in a bit of form after a T3 at The American Express last week, but for someone who adores this event and Torrey Pines more than anyone else in the field.

Former World No.1 Day is a two-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open. Yes, those wins came a while back in 2015 and 2018 when Day was playing the best golf of his career, but the signs of a resurgence in the Australian's career are there for all to see at the moment.

The 2015 US PGA champion is winless on the PGA Tour since May 2023 but on the whole all areas of Day's game look sharp as heads to San Diego.

The back is, touch wood, holding in there nicely for Day at the moment and that is much down to tweaking his swing slightly to go easier on the spine.

With the field already cutting up badly as I say, Day will fear nobody in this lineup as he goes in pursuit of a Farmers Insurance Open hat-trick and 14th career title on the PGA Tour.

If you fancy a bit of value for an outright win bet this week, look no further than Day at a best price of 28/1.

Ludvig Aberg
Ludvig Aberg

Tip 2: Ludvig Aberg - 11/1

Ludvig Aberg very much appears over his recent knee injury and primed to win again on the PGA Tour.

The European Ryder Cup hero ended 2024 nicely with a solo sixth in Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge and he rung in the New Year with an impressive T5 at The Sentry three weeks ago at Kapalua.

Aberg has taken the last two weeks off and should be nicely rested for this week's event, staged over both a tough South Course and easier North Course at Torrey Pines.

The South Course is something of a brute at 7,800 yards and Aberg is one of the longest and best drivers of the golf ball which should stand him in good stead here.

Aberg and Matsuyama are the only two players in the top 10 taking part this week, and while you do have to respect Matsuyama's recent win at The Sentry, I just feel Aberg is the better fit for this week's tournament. Matsuyama can prove a little wild off the tee from time to time, and that could find him out on the South Course, where you need to find the fairways to perform well.

Day is my No.1 pick for the win this week at nearly three times the odds of Aberg, but if the former World No.1 doesn't turn up for whatever reason this week I expect Aberg to pick up the pieces and capture a second PGA Tour title.

Max Greyserman

Tip 3: Max Greyserman - 30/1

It's a matter of time until Max Greyserman sees out a first PGA Tour title.

Greyserman is arguably the most in-form American player on the PGA Tour right now.

He has notched eight top-25 finishes in his last 10 starts, including an impressive three top-twos.

Greyserman missed the cut in this tournament in his first attempt last season, but you can put a line through that as he is a completely different player heading to Torrey Pines this time around.

While I do prefer the similar odds available for Day to win this week. Greyserman, at a best odds of 30/1, is definitely an eye-catching price for someone who is regularly knocking on the door.

Please gamble responsibly.
