Gary Player to golf legend Jack Nicklaus: "If it was that easy why didn't you do it?"

Gary Player has playfully chided Jack Nicklaus with a claim he made about his illustrious golf career.

Gary Player says he believes winning nine majors on the senior tour eclipsed what he achieved during his pomp.

Player won the first of his nine major championship victories at the 1961 Masters Tournament

By the time he made debut on the senior circuit aged 50, he had won two more green jackets as well as winning the U.S. PGA Championship twice, the U.S. Open once and The Open three times.

His career on the PGA Tour Champions saw him lift 19 titles which included nine senior major wins.

"I think the nine majors on the senior tour were better," Player told Grant Horvat in a YouTube video that was published on 20 January.

Horvat and the 89-year-old teamed up to play a nine-hole scramble.

Their target was to break 32.

"I'll tell you why," continued Player. "Because you gotta do it when you're 50 and over.

"Now, I'm the only one that won the grand slam on the regular tour and the senior tour.

"Now if it was that easy why didn't [Arnold] Palmer, why didn't [Jack] Nicklaus, why didn't [Lee] Trevino why didn't [Tom] Watson do it?

"Why didn't they do it if it was that easy?

Player added that Bernhard Langer's 11 senior major wins was one of the most impressive accomplishments ever in the game.

Over the course of the video, Player also claimed:

  • Golf's rule makers aren't doing enough to deal with how far the ball travels
  • Players are only winning 'half a tournament' these days because of the PGA Tour-LIV Golf divide
  • People who make comparisons between Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus' achievements 'don't know what they are talking about' because the greens the two played on were completely different
  • He's had 37 holes-in-one during his career
  • He believes he would have won three to four more majors if he was born in America
  • Ben Hogan knew more about the golf swing than 'any human being that has ever lived'
  • Tiger would have won 'at least 22 majors' if he did not change his swing after winning the U.S. Open by 15 strokes in 2000
