Bryson DeChambeau has revealed he'll likely soon have a new set of irons in his golf bag.

The reigning U.S. Open champion played his way into contention for the green jacket at Augusta National for the second year running last week.

But the 31-year-old came up short in his bid for a maiden Masters title after he made too many sloppy errors in the final round.

For one week only, one of DeChambeau's usual strengths turned into a weakness as he struggled with his irons.

It led to a number of missed greens and forced DeChambeau to rely on his short game and putting to keep him in the tournament.

Any faint hopes he had of winning The Masters were dashed when he found the water with his approach at the par-4 11th.

DeChambeau tried to draw a 9-iron into the back left pin from from 179 yards but his golf ball started left kept going in the same direction.

"For some reason I'm just not fully optimised," DeChambeau later said.

"I get over it and I feel like I'm going to hit the heel and I try to pull across it and it just goes left on me."

His next opportunity to add to his tally of two major titles will arive in seven weeks' time when he travels to Quail Hollow for the US PGA Championship.

It's not out of the realms of possibility that he has a new set of irons, according to DeChambeau.

"You're going to see some new equipment here very, very soon, which hopefully will optimise my game to an even greater level," he said.

"Super excited about it, actually."
