Golfer DQ'd at AIG Women's Open after major caddie blunder
Ana Pelaez Trivino was disqualified from the AIG Women's Open during the second round after her caddie made an horrendous blunder.
A competitor in the AIG Women's Open was disqualified after her caddie used a rangefinder.
Ana Pelaez Trivino, who was playing in the major for the third time in her career, was booted out after completing her second round.
She carded a 74 on Friday afternoon and, along with her opening 72, was well placed to make the projected cut on the number.
But it has transpired her caddie used a distance measuring device on the 10th at 18th holes at the Old Course in St Andrews.
The Royal & Ancient prohibits the use of DMDs, although some major governing bodies permit them.
Making matters worse, had her looper Miguel Evangelio Gomez-Escolar only used the rangefinder once she would have just been assessed a two-shot penalty instead of the brutal DQ.
The disqualification was applied under Rule 4.3.
Trivino has not yet commented on the matter.
Her disqualification could prove extremely costly, though, considering she has only made three cuts from 10 starts on the LPGA Tour this season.
The prize purse for this year's AIG Women's Open is $9,000,000.
At the end of day two, American world number one Nelly Korda held a three-shot lead.
Korda carded her second consecutive round of 4-under 68 in the morning wave.
England's Charley Hull is tied for second with the defending champion Lilia Vu on 5-under.
Olympic gold medallist Lydia Ko is also inside the top-10.
