The R&A has confirmed the prize purse for the AIG Women's Open.

The governing body for the major, played at the Old Course at St Andrews this week, has revealed the total purse this week is $9.5m

That means the winner will walk away with the top prize of $1,425,000

It is an overall increase of $500,000 from last year when America's Lilia Vu triumphed at Walton Heath.

Martin Slumbers, the outgoing chief executive of the R&A, said: "With the outstanding backing we have received from AIG as our title sponsor we have been able to achieve a step change and take this championship to new levels.

"We greatly appreciate AIG's support and are proud that they share our goal to elevate the AIG Women's Open still further and ensure it remains at the pinnacle of the women’s game.

"The increased prize fund and our enhancements to the staging and the spectator experience this year reflect our shared commitment to making the AIG Women’s Open a world class championship for players and fans alike."

Despite the increase, the AIG Women's Open purse is considerably smaller than what the men competed for at Royal Troon in July.

Xander Schauffele claimed the claret jug and walked away with $3.1m from the $17.5m purse.
