Major winner calls for U.S. Ryder Cup change: "I know the European team does a great job with that"

U.S. Ryder Cup hopeful Wyndham Clark believes the Americans should do 'more team stuff' in the build-up to the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black.

Former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark wants Keegan Bradley to take a leaf out of the Europeans' book ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup

Clark is hopeful he will be among Bradley's dozen that will head to Bethpage Black on the outskirts of New York this September.

The 31-year-old is currently 16th in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings but there is still plenty of golf - and three major championships - to be played before the dust-up.

"I would love for Team USA to do more team stuff as far as events like this or if we go play certain events together," Clark told reporters at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

"I know the European team does a great job with that."

The European team will once again be led by Luke Donald after he retained his captaincy following their 16½-11½ win in Italy two years ago.

In January, 20 golfers from Great Britain and Ireland and Continental Europe contested the Team Cup.

The event, held in Abu Dhabi, served as a valuable warm-up and gave Donald and his vice-captains valuable insight.

Great Britain and Ireland, led by Justin Rose, secured a commanding 17-8 win over Francesco Molinari's Continental Europe.

Before the 2023 Ryder Cup, all 12 of Donald's team played in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Clark admits there may be an issue though.

"At the same time, guys are probably more focused on what they're doing right now in this part of the season," he said.

"And they care more about their individual things, and then as we get closer to that time, then they start focusing on that [Ryder Cup]."

Jose Maria Olazabal named European vice-captain

Meanwhile, former Masters winner Jose Maria Olazabal has been named as Europe's third vice-captain.

The 59-year-old was the last man to captain Team Europe to victory on American soil.

Olazabal was one of Donald's vice-captains in 2023 and he joins stats guru Edoardo 'Dodo' Molinari and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn.

He said he had to think about taking on the role again.

Olazabal added: "When Luke approached me and asked me about the possibility of being a vice-captain again, I have to be honest, I thought about it for a while because being in New York, it's not going to be easy.

"But the Ryder Cup is very close to my heart. I have wonderful memories about this event so I said yes.

"I think Luke did a wonderful job in Rome and I believe he will do a very good job this time round too.

"He took care of absolutely all the details: players, caddies, families. It was wonderful to see some of the lines he came up with and the images from past champions."
