Sergio Garcia provides health update after battling to third straight LIV Golf team title
Sergio Garcia battles through bronchitis to lead Fireballs GC to a third straight victory on LIV Golf in Singapore.
Sergio Garcia's red-hot Fireballs GC landed a third straight title on LIV Golf on Sunday, despite their captain going down with bronchitis all week.
Garcia's team, which comprises himself as captain, David Puig, Abraham Ancer and Luis Masaveu, captured their third straight team title at LIV Golf Singapore.
They also won the team event at LIV Golf Adelaide and LIV Golf Hong Kong, the latter of which Garcia also won the individual title.
Fireballs GC finished 22-under par at LIV Golf Singapore and three shots clear of Jon Rahm's Legion XIII.
Torque GC's Joaquin Niemann went on to win the individual title at LIV Golf Singapore by five shots over five-time major champion and Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka.
The win marked Niemann's second individual title in the last three events and his fourth career individual title on LIV Golf.
But back to the top of the story, and Garcia's health update.
Garcia admitted on Sunday he had been battling with bronchitis and a fever for much of the week at Sentosa GC.
But with all four scores now counting this season across the full 54 holes in LIV Golf team events, Garcia knew he had to knuckle down and fight through his fever in order to help the team.
Although Garcia could only finish level par in T32 in the individual race this week, his efforts were enough to help his team get over the line and record a threepeat on LIV Golf.
"Tuesday night I started feeling a little bit congested," revealed Garcia.
"Wednesday it was OK. We had a nice practice round. But I could feel like I wasn't breathing as well. Thursday I was feeling quite badly, and the doctor looked at me, he told me I had bronchitis, which I still have. He gave me some medicine. Thursday afternoon I had 102.4 fever, so I wasn't feeling great.
"But then it seems like the meds kicked in at night, and my fever kind of broke. That was great. But obviously my chest, every time I cough, it hurts. The last couple of days the congestion has kind of gone to my nose.
"In these conditions, in this weather, as hot as it is, it was tough for me to keep it going throughout the whole day. Obviously as the day was going on I was getting a bit more tired because of the lack of energy because of how I was feeling. But I still tried to give it everything I have."
Garcia will now be looking to get himself back to full health ahead of the next LIV Golf event in Miami from 4-6 April.
He will then head over to compete in the first major of the season at The Masters at famed Augusta National from 10-13 April.
Garcia is eligible to compete in The Masters for the rest of his golf career having slipped on the coveted Green Jacket in 2017.
The Spaniard is eager to try and earn a captain's pick in Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup team this September.
Garcia is the all-time Ryder Cup record points scorer (28.5 pts).
Should Garcia indeed go on to make Donald's team, he will join Lee Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo for a record 11 appearances on a European Ryder Cup team.
