Key features
- The new "Speed Step" crown and aerodynamic head reduce drag and increase clubhead speed
- The new "R-MOTO" face technology is 10% lighter for added forgiveness and a lower centre of gravity
Looks: The look of the new "Speed Step" crown - which we thought looked very similar to the "turbulators" seen on the PING G30 driver - appealed to both testers, especially with the Callaway chevron acting as a neat alignment aid through the middle. The matte black finish also reduced glare, and the clubhead sits nicely on the ground ready for take off. Tester's comment: "The giant sweetspot and overall apperance inspires plenty of confidence."
Feel: One of the better sounding drivers in the test and suitable feedback on off-centre hits. Although the stock True Temper shaft felt a little lightweight at times, it was easy enough to control through the swing. It did feel a little longer than ideal at 46". Tester's comment: "You can feel it's packed full of power just standing over the ball."
Performance: Not quite as long or as forgiving as we were anticipating given the hype, but it is consistent enough across the board. The new aerodynamic head shape certainly contributed to increased clubhead speed for both testers and several above-average hits over 275 yards. Tester's comment: "The giant sweetspot saved several of my squiffy swings."
Verdict - SILVER
A solid offering from Callaway with a fresh new look on the crown, suitable distance, mid-high launch, and decent forgiveness on off-centre hits - so we feel it offers great value for money at less than £300. It did not always feel the easiest to control given the added length and lightweight shaft, so we would certainly recommend getting custom fitted to reap the full rewards of this one.
