Tiger Woods has revealed he told captain Jim Furyk that he wanted to step down from Friday afternoon's foursomes following his poor performance in the morning fourballs alongside Patrick Reed.

The referenced media source is missing and needs to be re-embedded.

Woods and Reed led Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari 2 up through 10 holes, but stumbled to a 3&1 loss after a number of erratic tee shots and approach shots.

While Woods looked to be struggling with his back at times, it was in fact his lack of ball striking that was the biggest reason that led Woods to tell captain Jim Furyk it was best to sit him out of the afternoon foursomes.

"My game is fine, but my cut really wasn't cutting off the tee today," said Woods.

"I was hammering it. The ball was going far. It was going straight, but it was not cutting. I can accept that. That's really no big deal. My putting feels solid. I'll be ready come tomorrow whenever captain (Jim Furyk) puts me out.''

On being in control of the match before letting things slip, Woods said: "We were in control of the match being 2 up, but we just didn't make any birdies coming in.

"You have to make birdies in fourball. You have to do it. We did it early. I think I made about four birdies there on that front nine.

"Pat had a couple. We were putting it on them, and then on the back nine, it flipped. They put it on us, and we couldn't answer.''

Judging by the Americans performance in the afternoon foursomes, Woods might wish as though he had put his name in the ring. As things stand, it's looking like a 4-0 whitewash to the Europeans which would see them move 5-3 ahead going into the weekend.
