Phil Mickelson reached this INSANE milestone Friday at the PGA Championship!
LIV Golf's Phil Mickelson reached an incredible milestone at the PGA Championship this week.
LIV Golf's Phil Mickelson reached an incredible milestone Friday at Oak Hill Country Club for the PGA Championship this week.
Mickelson, 52, is a two-time PGA Championship winner, clinching the tournament title in 2005 and then again recently in 2021.
When he won it two years ago in Kiawah, he became the oldest men's player to win a major championship.
He missed his title defence last year at Southern Hills, after announcing in February 2022 that he'd be taking some time off following controversial comments that were published.
Now a LIV Golf player, Mickelson was one of 16 players from the rival league teeing it up this week in Rochester, New York. 11 of those players made the cut.
He shot rounds of 73 and 72 on Thursday and Friday to make the cut right on the number at 5-over par.
As a result, he reached an incredible milestone.
By making it into the weekend, it marked Mickelson's 100th made cut at a major championship in 119 starts.
And it nearly didn't happen, as Mickelson was saved a penalty stroke Friday by a rules official.
After hitting it into the hazard at the par-4 6th, Mickelson took a drop.
However, he didn't realize the rules regarding drops had been slightly changed for 2023, and had unknowingly taken a bad drop.
Luckily for him, a rules official noticed and stopped the six-time major champion before he committed the rules breach.
He was able to fix his drop and walked away from the hole with a double-bogey 6 that could have very well been a triple-bogey 7 and a missed cut.
On Saturday, he began his round 10-strokes back of the leaders who were at 5-under par. He was playing alongside Tyrrell Hatton.
