Phil Mickelson to Bones: "Did you get mugged? What the hell happened?!"
Phil Mickelson was shocked by caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay's appearance in a story from Thursday.
Jim 'Bones' Mackay has revealed a sensational story about caddying for Phil Mickelson.
Mackay is a long-time PGA Tour caddie who spent much of his career working for Mickelson before becoming an on-course commentator.
He came out of retirement recently to work for Justin Thomas, and was on the bag for the 30-year-old when he won the PGA Championship last year at Southern Hills Country Club.
Thomas made a Sunday charge up the leaderboard and then defeated Will Zalatoris in a playoff to claim his second career major title.
This week, the pair are back for their title defence at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.
Thomas shot a 2-over par 72 Thursday for the first round.
And while Mackay is currently considered one of the greatest caddies in golf, it hasn't always been smooth sailing, according to him.
Mackay recently recalled a story from 1993 when he caddied for Mickelson, while speaking on Golf.com's "The Scoop."
Mickelson had made a late charge up the leaderboard and was tied for first as his group made their way to the 17th hole.
“He’s gone from 50th to tied for first,” Mackay recalled, adding:
And, as Mackay soon learned, it may not have been the best idea.
“All of the sudden, I see my ankles and my feet right in front of my face,” he said.
“I show up, I’ve got a bloody lip, covered in dirt,” Mackay said when he reached Mickelson who was already at the 17th tee.
Mickelson, who now plays over on LIV Golf, is also in the field this week at the PGA Championship, after winning the tournament for the second time in his career back in 2021.
He shot a 3-over par 73 Thursday.
