How injured is Jordan Spieth? This is what he had to say
Jordan Spieth is playing the PGA Championship this week despite a nagging wrist injury.
Jordan Spieth is putting in the effort to try and achieve the career Grand Slam this week despite a nagging wrist injury.
The three-time major champion needs a win at the PGA Championship to complete the incredible feat that's only been done by five other people.
It's been nearly six years since the 29-year-old won his last major, The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017. He won it that year by three strokes over Matt Kuchar.
Spieth then went through a tough period of golf where he constantly struggled to find his way into contention.
It resulted in a long winless period on the PGA Tour before finally claiming his 12th career victory in 2021.
Now, the current World No. 10 has a solid chance to win this week at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, however a nagging wrist injury may be getting in his way.
Last week Spieth withdrew from the AT&T Byron Nelson, a tournament in his home state of Texas that he regularly attends.
However, despite his surprise withdrawal, Spieth says he's ready for this year's second major.
"I wouldn't play if I didn't think I was in good enough shape to be able to play," he told reporters following a practice round on Wednesday.
He later elaborated:
"It's not fun if you don't think you have a chance to win, and so if I felt like I was limited in a way that would affect my chances, there'd be no reason for me to feel like playing because then I could further damage it and that's not worth it," Spieth said, adding:
He also spoke about the only aspect that could become an issue this week with his wrist issues:
Spieth will tee off in the early wave Thursday for the first round of the PGA Championship in a group with Shane Lowry and Viktor Hovland.
