Multiple PGA Tour winner and former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker has withdrawn from the 2024 PGA Championship, citing his age and tiredness.

Stricker, whose most recent event was the Regions Tradition on the PGA Tour Champions, told the official website the venue for the second men's major of the year might be too difficult for him.

"I'd love to be there because it is a big event, but it's a big course" Stricker told reporters of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

But the 57-year-old conceded: "I'm tired. I'm old. You know, I know where my place is.

"I'm going to assess where I'm at. But I'm kind of leaning towards not going."

The former Ryder Cup captain got his place in the field next week thanks to his victory at last year's senior PGA Championship.

It represented one of his six victories last year.

Stricker has been replaced in the field by Alex Smalley.

Smalley is playing his second full season on the PGA Tour and went into the final round of the Myrtle Beach Classic in T-7.

The 2024 US PGA Championship begins on 16 May.

Unsurprisingly, world number one Scottie Scheffler is the overwhelming favourite to clinch his second major victory of the year.

Scheffler's appearance was in doubt because he did not want to miss the birth of his first child.

But Sports Illustrated have confirmed his wife Meredith has given birth and therefore Scheffler will tee it up.
