Bryson DeChambeau implored to make PGA Tour return
On this week's episode of the Par FORE Podcast, the team discuss Bryson DeChambeau and why he might now be the most likeable golfer in the world.
Bryson DeChambeau is, without a doubt, one of golf's most entertaining players.
But is he now also one of the most likeable?
DeChambeau, 30, has been a curious character ever since he broke onto the golf scene.
As a physics major, DeChambeau has always marched to the beat of his own drum, be it in designing his own clubs or employing unconventional strategies to outwit his opponents.
He's a player who rarely observes the status quo, and for many years, that made him quite a polarising character on the PGA Tour.
We discussed DeChambeau in the most recent episode of the Par FORE Podcast presented by GolfMagic.
You can watch that below:
He famously packed on an incredible amount of weight in order to increase the distance he could hit the ball, and in doing so, won the 2020 US Open.
The list of ways DeChambeau has attempted to gain a competitive edge is longer than my arm, and some have worked while others have been a bit hit-and-miss; side saddle putting is one that comes to mind.
While he has long been considered a bit of a Marmite golfer, he has always been intriguing, and when he decided to sign for the LIV Golf League in June of 2022, he only added fuel to the fire for those who perhaps weren't quite so keen on him.
Despite that, since moving to the breakaway League, his popularity amongst golf fans seems to have skyrocketed, perhaps being the only player who has gained popularity amongst fans of the PGA Tour since the big LIV/PGA Tour divide.
His most recent performance at the US PGA, where he finished second, was particularly well received, with the crowds at Valhalla Golf Club cheering him on at every turn.
There was one moment in particular that led him to be coined 'a man of the people' after he shouted down an adult spectator for stealing a ball he had thrown to a child in the crowd.
Check out the moment below
US PGA Championship aside, though, why has DeChambeau become one of the most likeable players in world golf?
Here's what I had to say on DeChambeau:
"I'll admit myself, I used to find him (DeChambeau) quite annoying and quite frustrating. I think switching hat has actually made a massive difference as stupid as that sounds.
"I also think his social media is absolutely spot on, he comes across really, really well in it, and that's endeared him to quite a lot of people. You can get to know him better than what you just see in interviews.
"When a lot of players left to LIV, they took a lot of the best characters that the PGA Tour had, and Bryson 100% falls into that category.
"His performance at the PGA was epic, he played well, he was interacting with the fans, and he just seems to be taking himself a little less seriously.
"He's unconventional, and he's great to watch, which is why he is such a huge loss for the PGA Tour."
Throughout the podcast, the GolfMagic team also discussed who are the most entertaining golfers at the moment, how much golf clubs have really changed in recent years, and why everyone should get a custom fitting.
