Why is Max Homa’s former caddie working with Justin Thomas at the Masters?

Joe Greiner, who had been caddying for Max Homa until their recent split, is filling in as caddie for Justin Thomas at the 2025 Masters.

Max Homa’s former caddie, Joe Greiner, has picked up Justin Thomas’ bag at the 2025 Masters.

But it will only be for one week at famed Augusta National.

Thomas was forced to select a temporary caddie after his regular looper, Matt ‘Rev’ Minister, injured his back.

Writing on social media, two-time US PGA champion Thomas stated: “Rev is resting up so he gets better soon, I’m very lucky Joe Greiner is a great friend and able to help me out last minute.”

Thomas, whose best finish at The Masters was a fourth place in 2020, has picked an experienced looper in Greiner, who finished tied for third at last year's Masters with Homa.

Homa revealed last week the reasoning behind his split with his lifelong friend and caddie was not his choice.

“We always had a deal that we’re friends first and friendship mattered more than the work thing, and he was wise enough to do what he did," said Homa, the former World No.5 who has incredibly slipped back to 81st in the OWGR.

“It’s hard. I’m just so used to him caddying, but I was happy that he did it.

“At the end of my days, we continue to be great friends than one of us resent the other for how hard this game can be on a relationship.

“So it sucks because I just picutred always walking fairways with Joe.”

Bill Harke caddied for Homa for one week immediately after his split with Greiner.

Homa has failed to make the cut in a PGA Tour event that featured a 36-hole cut since the 2024 Open Championship.

The six-time winner on the PGA Tour will hope the notoriously difficult Augusta National will be where he can finally break his streak and make the Masters cut.
