Tiger Woods discovers fate of crucial vote on his PGA Tour future
Tiger Woods will be allowed to compete at all the signature PGA Tour events for the rest of his life to recognise his special achievements.
The PGA Tour have confirmed Tiger Woods has been awarded a lifetime exemption into all of the 'signature' events.
Rumours about this started circulating before the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2.
But it has now been confirmed the hall of famer will be able to pick and choose the marquee events he'd like to play after a new category was created just for him.
The news was delivered to PGA Tour members via a memo, which read: "An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognise Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80-plus career wins."
Woods has a won a total of 82 PGA Tour titles along with 15 major championships.
He is tied for Sam Snead for most overall Tour victories. Only Jack Nicklaus has won more major championships (18).
Woods' career looked over after he crashed his luxury SUV in the Los Angeles Hills in February 2021.
He suffered traumatic injuries to his right leg and later revealed that doctors told him there was a 50 per cent chance his leg would be amputated.
But he fought hard in rehab, making a sensational return to men's professional golf at the 2022 Masters.
Since then, Woods has been reduced to just nine tournament starts. He's also had more surgery on his right ankle.
He has made just won cut this year, which came once again at Augusta National.
Woods was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in February due to illness.
He missed the cut at the PGA Championship and last week's US Open at Pinehurst No.2.
Woods was asked if he would benefit by playing more in between major championships.
But the 48-year-old ruled the prospect of competing more frequently out because he feared getting injured .
"I'm physically getting better as the year has gone on," Woods told reporters.
"I just haven't been able to play as much because I just don't want to hurt myself pre, then I won't be able to play in the major championships.
"It's pick your poison, right? Play a lot with the potential of not playing, or not playing and fight being not as sharp."
What are signature events?
Signature events were created as a response to the rival LIV Golf League.
PGA Tour signature events are limited-field tournaments with increased prize money.
There were eight signature events for the 2023-2024 season.
For 2024, the top 50 players from the previous season's FedEx Cup points list through the Tour Championship were eligible to participate.
There are other initiatives, such as the AON Swing 5, which award spots in the fields for the in-form players.
Sponsor exemption's into the signature events also still exist.
