PGA Tour pro hits out at 'weird' and 'wild' Matt Kuchar decision at Wyndham
PGA Tour pro Michael Kim believes it was 'wild' for Matt Kuchar not to finish his final round on Sunday night at the Wyndham Championship.
PGA Tour pro has hit out at Matt Kuchar's controversial decision to not finish off his final round on Sunday night at the Wyndham Championship.
Kuchar, 46, refused to play a few more shots on the par-4 18th because he deemed it was too dark to continue at Sedgefield Country Club.
That was despite his playing partners Max Greyserman and Chad Ramey electing to carry on and finish off their round.
Kuchar was the only man in the entire field to come back and finish off his round on Monday morning.
It meant a number of volunteers and event crew had to also come back just to let Kuchar complete his last hole.
The decision irked a number of PGA Tour fans and golf industry members.
Kuchar ended up returning on Monday and immediately asked for a TIO as a result of a scoreboard being in the line of his shot to the pin.
He was able to move his ball to the adjacent fairway and well away from the large cluster of trees in the rough down the left of 18.
Kuchar came up just shy of the green and chipped up to two feet to ensure a safe par.
He finished T12 to secure $140k and it bumped him up to 103rd in the PGA Tour standings where the top 125 will earn their status for 2025.
After tapping home for par, Kuchar apologised to a group of volunteers and event staff that stayed behind to allow him to finish out on Monday.
PGA Tour pro Michael Kim, who won the 2018 John Deere Classic, thought Kuchar's decision to come back on Monday was not only 'weird' but also 'wild'.
Kim posted on X / Twitter:
"The Kuchar thing was def weird. I've heard his explanation and he didn't know Aaron [Rai] had birdied 18, and thought his playing partner Max [Greyserman] still had a chance to win . Since Max (if he still had a chance) wasn't going to finish, he thought why would I force it when it's so dark out. I couldn't finish? Either way, it's wild to me that he chose not to finish. He's not trying to get into next week at that point. Idk if they had to cut or roll the greens. I assume a rules official, some range, golf course staff had to come back. What a weird ending haha."
Kim was forced to withdraw from the Wyndham Championship over the weekend despite having made the cut.
He cited a back injury for his WD.
"It was a rollercoaster week for me," tweeted Kim.
"Super proud of making a 9ft to make the cut but then to make a mess of it all resulting in a WD becasue of my back was really disappointing.
"I don't think it's anything too serious but had to WD out of precaution. I'll be back for Napa."
