Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin fended off a final-day surge from Danish twins Nicolai Hojgaard and Rasmus Hojgaard to win their first PGA Tour titles at the Zurich Classic  of New Orleans.

Novak, 30, and Griffin, 28, held a three-shot lead heading into the final round at TPC Louisiana.

After a nervy start in Sunday's tougher foursomes format, they were quickly pegged back by their playing partners Jake Knapp and Frankie Capan III.

European Ryder Cup hopefuls, the Hojgaard twins, also threw their hat into the ring down the closing stretch.

But it was Griffin who dealt the hammer blow when converting a 35-footer from off the green at the tough par-3 17th.

That put Novak and Griffin two shots clear heading down the last, and despite a somewhat fortuitous birdie from the Hojgaards in the group ahead, the American duo played safe and two-putted for par to see out their maiden wins on the PGA Tour.

Novak and Griffin carded a gutsy 1-under 71 to finish the week on 27-under par.

They finished one shot clear of the Hojgaards (68) on 26-under par.

Knapp and Capan III could only par the par-5 18th for a round of 70 but they settled for solo third on 25-under par.

Four groups then tied for fourth a further short back on 24-under par.

All eyes were on defending champions Rory Mcilroy and Shane Lowry starting the week but the Irish duo could not get anything going on Sunday as they carded a lacklustre 72 to finish T12 on 22-under par.

The wins for both Novak and Griffin had been coming on the PGA Tour, especially for Novak who had finished tied third and second in his last two starts entering the tournament this week.

"It feels pretty amazing right now, we have so many people to thank who have gotten us this far," said Griffin during an interview with on-course commentator David Howell on the 18th green.

"This is a great one and we're going to soak it in, and I couldn't think of a better guy to get my first one with."

Novak said: "So excited, you don't know how many chances you're going to get.

"I knew I was playing well after last week (finishing runner-up to Justin Thomas at the RBC Heritage), but it's tough to come back and do this.

"I'm so glad I had Ben with me, we had a lot of 6am mornings at Sea Island, we put in so much work and to see him play as well as he did down the back stretch I'm so pleased for him."

The victory for Novak and Griffin sees them earn $1.3m each, and more importantly a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour each.

The final round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was suspended for more than hour due to lightning earlier in the day.

Prior to the suspension, there was also a power outrage in TPC Louisiana, which meant CBS and Golf Channel were unable to provide any live coverage to PGA Tour fans for at least a couple of hours.

It led to uproar with PGA Tour fans.
