Akshay Bhatia three-putts 18 to hand Cam Davis Rocket Mortgage Classic title
Cam Davis lands a second Rocket Mortgage Classic after taking full advantage of a late slip from PGA Tour star Akshay Bhatia.
Akshay Bhatia three-putted the par-4 18th from 35 feet to hand Cam Davis his second Rocket Mortgage Classic in three years at Detroit Golf Club.
Bhatia, 22, was bidding to complete his PGA Tour hat-trick and a second title of 2024 but the American had something of a shocker on the 18th green.
He left his birdie putt some five feet short and then missed the par putt to hand Davis his second career title on the PGA Tour.
Davis carded a final-round 70 to finish the week 18-under par and one shot clear of Bhatia (72), Davis Thompson (68), Min Woo Lee (69) and Aaron Rai (72).
It marked Davis' second career title on the PGA Tour having previously etched his name on the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021.
After enduring a big dip in form this season, Davis revealed his delight at having turned his game around in Michigan.
Davis did not have a single top-10 finish to his name on the PGA Tour in 2024 prior to entering this week.
The victory sees Davis pocket a cheque for $1.65m and he now moves into the top 40 in the FedEx Cup standings.
An emotional Davis said:
"From where I was from a couple of weeks ago to today... I wouldn't wish what happened to Akshay on anyone, but I've done a lot of grinding to get myself out of a whole, so to somehow do that, it's pretty good."
Cameron Young was left to rue a number of missed putts in the final round and snapping his driver on the 14th as his wait for a first PGA Tour title rumbles on.
Young slumped to a dismal 73 to finish three shots off the pace on 15-under par alongside Rico Hoey (67), Eric Cole (69) and Erik van Rooyen (72).
