Senior Open: Watch this pro have an absolute shocker at Carnoustie!
Senior Open: Paul Broadhurst left golf fans shocked at Carnoustie as he channelled his inner Hale Irwin and missed a putt from less than an inch.
Golf fans were bellowing that Paul Broadhurst channelled his inner Hale Irwin after missing a putt from less than an inch during the Senior Open at Carnoustie.
If you don't remember, Irwin's whiff during the 1983 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale went down as the shortest missed putt in the history of golf.
Irwin went on to lose by one stroke to Tom Watson that year, so we would suggest that Broadhurst won't lose as much sleep as the American.
Former Ryder Cupper Broadhurst was playing the first round of the senior major when the blunder happened.
It arrived on the 7th hole and the Englishman, clearly annoyed with his par effort, attempted to jab the ball into the hole.
But he missed the ball completely.
It beggars belief, doesn't it? It's a funny old game.
Sky Sports' Andrew Coltart said on the broadcast: "In his day he would've knocked that one in for par and he’s obviously frustrated, he’s in a bit of pain.
"To me, that's an attempt at a stroke and I think he knows it."
Broadhurst did record his score as a double-bogey six.
The 58-year-old played the front nine in 2-over par.
But he rebounded quickly, making birdies at the 10th, 12th and 14th to move back into the red for the day.
This is Broadhurst's ninth start in the Senior Open.
He won multiple times during his career, including the Senior PGA Championship title in 2018.
His son Sam is also a professional golfer.
