Pia Babnik hit a brutal shank into the water with her third shot into the par-4 15th during the third round of the Women's Olympic Golf Competition at Le Golf National in Paris.

Babnik, 20, was very much in contention at 1-under par for the round and 5-under par for the tournament as she boarded the tough 15th with water all down the right flank and guarding the green.

But it all went south for the Slovenian from there as she found the water with her tee shot.

Babnik took her drop in the fairway under a one-shot penalty and then proceeded to shank her third shot into the water.

She then found the green with her fifth shot and took three putts from there to record a disastrous quadruple-bogey eight.

Defending champion Nelly Korda also made a quad during the second round when making a seven on the par-3 16th.

Babnik, a two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, went on to birdie the par-5 18th to card a 2-over 74.

It leaves her at 2-under par for the tournament and seven shots off the pace currently set by New Zealand's Lydia Ko and Switzerland's Morgane Metraux.

Team USA's Rose Zhang and Japan's Miyu Yamashita are two shots back in a tie for third.

Metraux eagled the par-5 18th to pull level with Ko, who could only make par.

Korda is still in the mix despite her horror quadruple-bogey on Thursday.

The runaway World No.1 carded a second consecutive round of 70 to progress to 4-under par.

That leaves her five shots back heading into Saturday's final round.

Team GB's Charley Hull carded an improved 3-under 69 to move to 5-over par for the tournament.
