Sergio Garcia shuts down pro’s “I’m the best player in LIV Golf history” claim
Sergio Garcia was having none of David Puig’s tongue-in-cheek claim that he is the best player in LIV Golf’s history.
Sergio Garcia was quick to refute David Puig's claim he is "the best player in LIV Golf history" after the young Spaniard officially became the all-time leader in team tournament wins on the LIV Golf League.
Fireballs GC claimed their third win in a row of the season at LIV Golf Singapore on Sunday, meaning Puig, 23, has now become the all-time leader in team tournament wins on the breakway Saudi league.
Garcia's team have now won in Adeliade, Hong Kong (where Garcia won the individual title) and Singapore.
“I guess I’m just the best player in LIV Golf history," said Puig, after being informed by a reporter of his latest achievement.
But his Fireballs GC captain Sergio Garcia, who was listening on in the background, was quick to play down such an audacious claim.
"..the best team player in LIV Golf history," Fireballs GC captain Garcia quickly interrupted Puig in his tracks.
Puig replied: "No, let’s just leave it at that."
LIV Golf Singapore marked Puig’s fourth win as a Fireballs GC member and his eighth overall.
The team win meant Puig has now replaced 4Aces GC captain Dustin Johnson and teammate Patrick Reed on seven wins (six regular season wins and the 2022 Team Championship).
Pat Perez was also part of those seven team wins, but the American is no longer a LIV Golf player.
Puig's other four team wins came when he was a member of Joaquin Niemann's Torque GC in 2023.
Niemann captured his fourth career LIV Golf win in Singapore with a comfortable five-shot victory over five-time major champion and Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka.
Is a first Ryder Cup on the cards for David Puig?
Puig’s recent performances on both LIV Golf and the DP World Tour have hinted the Spaniard could be very much in Luke Donald's thinking for a debut appearance in the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.
Much will likely depend if Puig is still in the same form as right now come September.
Puig's solo fourth-place position in Singapore now puts him sixth in the season-long points race on the LIV Golf League.
Since the last Ryder Cup in 2023, the Spaniard has won twice on the Asian Tour, proving himself to be a clutch Sunday performer.
Puig has also proven his class on the DP World Tour in recent months with four top-five finishes at the Open de Espana (T3), Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (T4), Ras Al Khaimah Championship (3) and Bahrain Championship (T4).
Across the first four LIV Golf League events this season, Puig is a collective 20-under par.
Fireballs GC captain Garcia considers Puig more than deserves to be throwing his cap into the ring where Ryder Cup consideration is concerned this September.
"Why not?" said Garcia, who revealed he was battling a fever and bronchitis at LIV Golf Singapore.
"Obviously, he's a great player, and he's becoming an even greater player.
"It's nice to see him develop and grow up and find his game and what ticks him and what makes him go to the level that he's been playing.
“Obviously, I don't have any say there. But I would lie if I didn't think that Luke [Donald, European captain] and his team are not looking at him.
“I'm sure they are because they're looking at everyone that has got potential of making the team, and I feel like if David keeps playing the way he's been playing, he's got potential to be in that team."
Garcia himself is also hoping to throw his name into the reckoning for what would be a joint record 11th European Ryder Cup appearance.
Should Garcia indeed go on to make Donald's team, he will join Lee Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo for a record 11 appearances on a European Ryder Cup team.
Garcia is the all-time Ryder Cup record points scorer (28.5 pts).
