Phil Mickelson with savage one-liner after taunt about his controversial past

Phil Mickelson hit back with a brutal one-liner after he was reminded of one of the most controversial moments of his illustrious career.

A few weeks ago Phil Mickelson poured cold water on some post-retirement rumours.

It was suggested that Mickelson, 53, should get behind the microphone and call the action as a golf commentator.

Lefty, whilst flattered, wasn't keen on the idea and instead revealed his future after his professional days finally come to an end will involve a series of made-for-YouTube matches.

The series is called 'Pros vs Schmos' and the first episode was uploaded to Mickelson's channel on 21 May.

Mickelson and his HyFlyers teammate Brendan Steele took on amateurs Kevin and Jack.

"They are legit one and two handicappers," the LIV Golf pro said.

"You will question that throughout the day."

Mickelson laid down the ground rules for the nine-hole match at Del Mar Country Club.

Should Kevin and Jack win, they were told they would get a year's supply of product from Mickelson's coffee brand For Wellness

And if they lose? Simply wear a HyFlyers cape the next time they played at their own courses.

One other thing, though.

The matches will always be governed by 'Phil's book of rules'.

Those rules?

Players can have more than 14 clubs if they want, the use of launch monitors is permitted and practice balls are also allowed.

And in some cases, mulligans are also acceptable if both teams don't have a shot.

One 'schmo' had the balls to ask Mickelson: "So what if your putt roles by the hole and you don't like what you see, can you just run back and hit it up?"

The comment was a clear reference to the six-time major champion hitting a moving putt at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills to prevent his ball from rolling off the green.

Mickelson initially defended what he did but later apologised for his 'embarrassing' actions.

He has said in the past it was one of the most regrettable moments of his career.

Clearly unphased by the trash talk from the 'schmo', Mickelson hit back: "Well, if you're quick enough - I don't think that's an issue with you - but if you're quick enough then yes."

Ouch.

Well played, Phil.
