Jon Rahm's caddie says what we all knew after latest LIV Golf triumph
Jon Rahm's caddie Adam Hayes admitted the Spaniard was playing to prove people wrong in 2024 after he joined the LIV Golf League.
Jon Rahm's caddie Adam Hayes admitted the golfer was trying to prove people wrong about his switch to LIV moments after the Spaniard won the individual title in his first season with the rival league.
Rahm shocked the world of sport when he agreed to join the breakaway tour last December for a mega-money fee.
He has since received his fair amount of criticism, with some observers suggesting he sold out.
Rahm was once an ardent defender of the PGA Tour but became the biggest name to defect nine months ago having made it clear the money 'wouldn't change my life'.
The 2023 Masters champion also previously slated LIV's 54-hole format, arguing they were 'not proper' golf tournaments.
Since he joined, there have been unsubstantiated reports that Rahm has regretted his decision.
Rahm laughed off those reports.
But it's fair to say the criticism, at times, has been difficult for Rahm to manage.
His caddie shone a light on what Rahm has had to endure after the 29-year-old scooped the individual title in Chicago on Sunday.
"This year we had a lot of different expectations and stuff," Hayes said after Rahm won at Bolingbrook Golf Club by three strokes over Joaquin Niemann.
"You know, it's hard to not listen to the people.
"So you have those expectations and it's been a tough year for a lot of different reasons."
Hayes said he felt for the first part of the season Rahm was trying to play to prove people wrong.
But that changed after playing at Valderrama in July, Hayes said.
"He started playing for himself."
