There are only a couple of individuals in the world of sport that transcend their game. Tiger Woods is one of them and so is Serena Williams and they were both in the same arena on Wednesday night.

Williams, 40, has declared the 2022 US Open will be her final tournament before hanging up her racket. She showed her typical determination and strength in the second round at Flushing Meadows to delay her retirement.

Despite being ranked 605th in the world, Williams beat second seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-2 in New York. She is still on track to win her seventh US Open title and 24th singles grand slam.

Williams wasn't short of support in the crowd. Woods was there cheering her on the whole way and footage of the 46-year-old showed he was desperate for Williams to get over the line.

The 15-time major champion sat next to Venus Williams, another superstar of tennis. Venus has won seven grand slam singles titles in her career, including two US Open trophies.

It is surprising that Woods has found time to catch a glimpse of the US Open tennis considering the developments in the golf world regarding the rebel LIV Golf Series and the PGA Tour.

Before launching Monday Night Golf with their new joint-venture TMRW Sports, Woods and Rory McIlroy were instrumental in formulating a revamped schedule for the Tour in 2023.

The 'top 20 players' have supposedly committed to playing 20 events next season which include all four major championships, 12 Elevated Events, The Players Championship and three other events of their choosing.

Woods congratulated McIlroy for his stunning victory at the Tour Championship last week on social media. It appears the 'Big Cat' has been involved in individual moments of history in two different sports in a matter of days.
