Report: PGA Tour boss to ignore wishes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus

A report from SI has confirmed the PGA Tour are intent on having designated events without a cut.

Jay Monahan appears to be fully intent on ploughing ahead with the PGA Tour having no-cut designated events despite the wishes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus

Per a report by SI's Bob Harig, Monahan has told reporters that his preference would be to have 'no-cut events' despite accusations of hypocrisy from a certain tour and the blowback from their existing members.

According to Harig, Monahan spent a large portion of his time recently trying to win over the membership for the flagship events.

Monahan told the media:

"One of the things we're working on for next year to make certain as it relates to cadence ... is that there's clear separation between designated events and our full‑field events and we get out of the position we've been in this year where we have a few isolated weeks."

There is no denying that Woods - along with Rory McIlroy - have essentially re-shaped the North American circuit.

Woods, 47, who is now out of action after undergoing more surgery on his right ankle, has consistently stated his affection for having cuts.

The 15-time major champion holds the record for most consecutive cuts made. That number? 142.

The streak began way back in 1998 and he set the record at the 2003 Tour Championship.

Speaking in April, Woods stated that he was absolutely not a fan of the idea. He went on to set another record

Nicklaus, too, has stated he's held discussions with Monahan to keep a 36-hole cut at his tournament at Muirfield Village.

Woods previously said:

"I certainly am pushing for my event to have a cut. I think that maybe the player-hosted events may have cuts. These are things that Jack [Nicklaus] and I are still in discussion with [Tour commissioner Jay Monahan] and the board and the Tour and the rest of the guys."

A number of players have offered their opinions. Adam Scott told SI having no cuts makes sense from a financial perspective.

Others have disagreed. Jason Day told the publication:

"I think the majority of the fans out there know that you come in, you play two days. If you don't play well, you're out, you don't get paid. That's just how our lives work.
"Don't get me wrong, if I'm in those events and we're playing for guaranteed money, tremendous. I mean, that's great. I think the biggest thing we've got to work out is see how this year goes, see how next year goes and then put them up against each other."

It is understood that the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will be 'designated' next year, replacing the WM Phoenix Open.

No decisions have yet been made, per the report
