Jason Day joins Rory McIlroy in WITHDRAWING from PGA Tour's RBC Heritage!
Australia's Jason Day joined Rory McIlroy in withdrawing from the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage, which has been given designated status.
Jason Day has joined Rory McIlroy in withdrawing from the RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour.
Day is one of four golfers that have withdrawn from the designated event at Harbour Town Golf Links along with Alex Noren and Will Zalatoris.
Zalatoris announced in a statement Monday that he had undergone back surgery and would miss the remainder of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.
Both Noren and McIlroy missed the cut this past week at The Masters, while Day finished T-39 at 5-over par having forced himself into contention after 36 holes.
No reason from the PGA Tour has been given for Day's withdrawal. This will be the Australian's first missed designated event.
The 35-year-old has not won on the PGA Tour since the 2017-18 season and has struggled with lingering back issues in recent years along with the devastating loss of his mother.
He's had a bit of a resurgence in recent showings with six top-10s in his past 14 events. His tie for 39th at The Masters on Sunday was his worst finish of the calendar year so far.
Last week at the 87th Masters, Day opened the tournament with a 5-under 67 and was tied for fourth, two shots back of the leaders, alongside Cameron Young.
He followed it up with an even-par 72 in the second round but then fell off after the cut, posting rounds of 74 and then an 8-over 80 on Sunday to fall down the leaderboard.
As for McIlroy, this is the second designated event that the Northern Irishman is missing in 2023, which would supposedly ruin his chances for the year-end PIP bonus.
But according to golf writer Alan Shipnuck, commissioner Jay Monahan has the power to make decisions regarding the PIP and McIlroy will not miss out on his bonus cash.
