Review: Swing Catalyst lesson at World of Golf

GOLFMAGIC
attended the official unveiling of the new World of Golf Performance Centre at Europe's busiest driving range in south-west London last night.

Treated to a Swing Catalyst session with Brian Lee, World of Golf Senior Teaching Professional, the South African took a closer look at the swings of Golfmagic's Andy Roberts and three-time European Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher, see video above.

About Swing Catalyst

Swing Catalyst, one of numerous game improvement facilities including Trackman, GC2, Flightscope and SAM Putting at the state-of-the-art Performance Centre in New Malden, London, is used by the likes of Justin Rose and is the market-leading expert in the new, rapidly emerging, area of balance and pressure analysis.

Consisting of more than 2,000 high-resolution pressure sensors, it provides a range of critical data including detailed foot pressure analysis, accurate pressure distribution, real-time centre of pressure (CoP) mapping, and CoP patterns, none of which can be seen by the best-trained eye or even the highest-speed cameras.

Rose, who secured four points for Europe as they won the biennial event at Gleneagles last month, said: "In my quest to be the best player I can be, Swing Catalyst helps me ensure no stone is left unturned and provides me with the confidence that I am always working on sound principles."

Rose's swing coach Sean Foley, who used to work with Tiger Woods, added: "Appreciating the importance of ground forces in the development of an effective golf swing, the Swing Catalyst system is unique in that it allows me to examine weight-shift patterns and balance - information that I couldn't ascertain if I were to rely on video alone."

Swing Catalyst (Bay 5) at World of Golf, New Malden

The 3D motion plate provides all of the balance-plate data as well as horizontal and vertical force measurements, giving complete analysis of torque and ground forces generated during the golf swing.

Swing Catalyst technology offers detailed swing analysis that can be uploaded onto a golfer's own Swing Catalyst account or viewed on a 42-inch screen in the bay.

It also features a GC2 launch monitor with high-speed stereoscopic camera to measure what's happening at the moment the club impacts the ball and provides instant feedback on ball speed, back and side spin, plus launch angle.

Other nice touches to this bay is a floor monitor so golfers don't have to lift their head to check swing changes, as well as a Huxley Premier Tee mat to ensure golfers can put their own tee pegs into the ground for preferred height - the turf also provides the sense you're playing from a course rather than a typical driving range bay.

Video Analysis

In terms of Andy's Swing Catalyst lesson in the video above, Brian wants him to work on his position when taking the club away from the body. The balance transfer, he says, is good, as too his shaft plane and rotation back down to the ball, but his left arm pushes out too much and that gives him a closed clubface - meaning there's often an inconsistent strike slightly off the toe. Brian wants Andy to visualise himself putting when taking the club back to help him get the arm more connected to his body.

Brian Lee is an 'AA' Rated PGA professional of South Africa. Brian is one of seven teaching professionals at World of Golf and joined the team to help drive the largest free learn to play golf programme in the world, offering group class coaching to adult and juniors.

He said: "I thoroughly enjoy coaching people of every age and ability and have helped an immense number of golfers reach their goals in the game through coaching that allows their natural swing to become repetitive and consistent."

Brian charges £30 for 30 minutes and £54 for 1 hour.
