Wilson D-100
The results were close but one club emerges as the winner
Brand: Wilson
3-wood: D-100
RRP: £129 Best price: £99
Loft: 15-degree Lie: 58-degree Length: 43” Swing Weight: D1
Shaft: Matrix OZIK HD5.1 Grip: Golf Pride Tour 25
Summary: Relocated CG 11% more toward the heel makes it easier to square the club face at impact; 8% back improves launch angle and spin rate, and through chemically-etching the crown, moving it 10% lower improves feel and launch angle.
Appearance: Low profile head with shallow face was inviting off the deck and the alignment logo and contrasting white scoring lines helped us place the clubhead down square at address. Crown was too shiny in the sun, though. 8
Feel: The D-100 promises super lightness and it delivers. The transition from backswing to downswing was effortless and the head felt extremely stable through impact. Sound at impact was too loud and off-putting at times. 7
Performance: A real fairway finder off the tee and pin seeker off the deck. It provided a pleasing mid-to-high launch thanks to the chemically-etched crown that saves weight to be repositioned for a low centre of gravity, but we felt it just lacked a little bit of fire off the face in comparison to some of the others. 8
Verdict: Not one of the longest fairway woods you will ever find but a decent performer nonetheless. Value for money at less than £130. 23
Pro Verdict: Lots of unwanted glare off the head when playing out in the sun. While very forgiving, I did feel it lacked fire off the face.
