Funding issues have resulted in a Glasgow golf course being closed down despite efforts by U.S. Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau.

West Dunbartonshire Council has announced it could no longer afford to subsidise Dalmuir Golf Course due to its steady decline in membership.

A video of DeChambeau posted by veteran caddie Craig Connelly on X earlier this week stressed the importance golf courses such as Dalmuir GC have in the community.

Justin Rose, Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, Robert MacIntyre and Paul McGinley had also given their backing for the popular Scottish course to remain open.

However, the council has today announced its decision as part of a package to close a £7.7m funding gap.

A petition was set up to try and save the golf course, arguing that closure would cut off a way for working-class people to get involved in the sport and more than 3,500 people signed it.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "Despite significant efforts, regrettably membership and usage of Dalmuir Golf Course has continued to decline.

"Our budget gap for 2025/26 was £7.7m and we expect further financial challenges in coming years so we must prioritise protection of the essential services we provide to residents including education, housing and citizen support."

Slight good news for the campaigners was that the council stated it would explore opportunities for the course to be passed into the hands of the local community via asset transfer.

In the video, Dechambeau stressed: “Sometimes people don't realise the impact of what golf can be and what it is for a community whether it's character development, personal growth, learning about yourself or family development.

"I think it's important for people to understand that if you don't have golf courses like Dalmuir, and a community like Dalmuir, it's difficult to continue to grow not only just a sport but a community.

"This golf course is super important. I know it's super important, and I hope that people can understand how important it is for your community to go out and sign that petition.

"Keep this golf course alive, keep it in existence. It's so important for everybody's sake.

"Not just to sell whatever it is you guys sell, but to create an amazing community that you can grow, work around and come together to make a different future for generations to come."
