Open will be last major of the year from 2019 as US PGA gets new date

The US PGA will move from August to May next year, making it the second major of the year after the Masters.

The PGA Tour season will also end in August, in order to avoid a clash with opening NFL fixtures.

The Players Championship – known as the “unofficial fifth major” – will move from May to March.

The Open in July will therefore be the last major on the calendar going forward.

"It's been our stated objective for several years to create better sequencing of our tournaments that golf fans around the world can engage in from start to finish," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

"And by concluding at the end of August, the FedEx Cup play-offs no longer have the challenge of sharing the stage with college and professional football."
