Viktor Hovland beats Jack Nicklaus' US Open amateur record
Viktor Hovland finishes the US Open with a score of -4 to beat Jack Nicklaus' record as the lowest scoring amateur at a US Open.
Viktor Hovland birdied the 18th hole in his final round at the 2019 US Open to finish with a round of 67, giving him a tournament score of 280 (-4), setting a new record for an amateur in US Open history. The record was previously held by none other than 18-time major champion, Jack Nicklaus.
"I didn't know that," said Hovland after his round. "That's pretty sweet."
The Norwegian started his week with a 69 on Thursday, followed by a 73 on Friday, 71 on Saturday and finishing with a 67 on Sunday.
“You just take a look around and you see the views and I’ve been fortunate enough to perform well here in the past,” he said.
Hovland is also the first player since Matt Kuchar in 1998 to be the low amateur in both the Masters and the US Open in the same year.
The 21 year old will be turning professional at next week's PGA Tour event, the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, where he can start taking home prize money. Had he been a professional for the US Open, Hovland would have taken home ssome serious money.
