How has this putt NOT dropped at the US Open?! This is unbelievable!!

Gordon Sargent wins low amateur at the US Open - but nobody can believe how his short par putt at 18 did not go into the hole?!

How has this putt NOT dropped at the US Open?! This is unbelievable!!

Gordon Sargent won the coveted low amateur prize at the US Open at Los Angeles Country Club, but he was left stunned with the rest of us as to how his short putt on 18 did not go down for a par.

Sargent, 20, finished the week on a respectable 4-over par, which was just inside the top 40 on the leaderboard.

That was enough to secure the low amateur US Open medal for the World No.1 amateur.

But really Sargent should have finished 3-over par as his two-foot par putt hit the back of the hole and incredibly popped back out.

While Sargent's putt was struck with some force from close range, many believe the cup had not been correctly fixed from earlier in the round when it needed to be replaced.

One of those critics was 2023 European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who described the missed putt as being "unacceptable".

The last time we remember this happening was to Alvaro Quiros at the 2015 Portugal Masters on the DP World Tour

Nevertheless despite the malfunction on 18, Sargent joins an illustrious group of names in winning low amateur at the US Open.

Past winners include Viktor Hovland in 2019, Scottie Scheffler in 2017, Patrick Cantlay in 2011, Phil Mickelson in both 1990 and 1991 and Jack Nicklaus in 1960 and 1961.

How has this putt NOT dropped at the US Open?! This is unbelievable!!

There were 19 amateurs teeing it up at the 2023 US Open and only four of them made the cut.

Ben Carr was down in 62nd position on 14-over par.

Aldrich Potgieter finished 64th on 15-over par with Maxwell Moldovan in 65th (last of those that made the cut) on 17-over par.
