Jon Rahm withdraws (!) from US Open
Jon Rahm has released a detailed statement confirming he has withdrawn from the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2 with a foot injury.
Former world number one Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the 2024 US Open with a foot injury.
Rahm confirmed the news with a statement on his social media platforms on 11 June, two days before the third men's major of the year.
The 2023 Masters champion wrote: "After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long term health, to withdraw from this week's US Open Championship.
"To say I'm disappointed is a massive understatement!
"I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I'm sure will be an amazing championship!
"Hopefully I'll be back in action sooner than later!"
Rahm arrived at in North Carolina today (Tuesday).
In a news conference, the Spaniard did admit he was unsure if he was going to play this week.
He withdrew from last week's LIV Golf event in Houston after playing only six holes of the second round.
It was later confirmed he had an infection in his left foot, caused by a lesion.
"It is doing better but the pain is high," he said, before confirming he was unlikely to play a practice round until Wednesday.
"I have a little hole between my pinky toe and next one and it got infected.
"I got a shot to numb the pain [before playing in Houston] that was supposed to last all round and it lasted two holes."
He added: "The infection is now controlled, but there's still swelling and there's still pain.
"There's a reason I walked out here in a shoe and a flip-flop, trying to keep the area dry and trying to get that to heal as soon as possible.
"But I can only do what I can do. The human body can only work so fast."
Rahm has performed well in LIV events since joining the breakaway last December.
But he will be bitterly disappointed with this setback considering how he struggled at Augusta National and missed the cut at last month's PGA Championship at Valhalla.
