Rory McIlroy has told Sir Nick Faldo "there would be a tinge of regret" if he did not go on to win The Masters and complete the career grand slam before he retires.

McIlroy, 34, made his feelings be known in a sit-down interview with three-time Masters champion Faldo during the season-ending DP World Tour Championship last week.

The four-time major champion now enters a 10th season since his last major victory coming at the 2014 US PGA at Valhalla.

Rory McIlroy says there would be a "tinge of regret" if he does not win The Masters

McIlroy just needs to slip on a green jacket at The Masters in order to join an elusive group of players including Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to complete the career grand slam.

As we join the interview between McIlroy and Faldo, the World No.2 jokes he could just "borrow" one of Faldo's three green jackets and be done with it.

The Northern Irishman was then pressed by Faldo on what his schedule might look like before the first major of the season at Augusta National on April 11, 2024.

McIlroy, who missed the cut in the 2023 Masters, told Faldo:

"I think I've learned anything over these last couple of years, I really like to play my way into the majors. I feel that week before if you're not playing the week before, you are just sitting around waiting for the week to come, so I'm going to make a conscious effort to play into the majors next year.
"I had a great chance in LA this year, didn't quite get it done. Oak Hill and The Open were decent performances but never had a chance to contend.
"At this stage of my career, I've done a lot of things but the one thing I haven't done is the thing you've done three times, that's what I want to do. I will be very happy with my career whenever I decide to walk away from it but I think there would be that tinge of regret if I didn't go on and join you for that lovely dinner on Tuesday night."

McIlroy was alluding to the Champions Dinner held every year of The Masters.

Six-time major champion Faldo, who won three Masters and three Opens, replied:

"Well if you want to come and chat to an old boy, you know where to find me, come and visit the farm and we can talk golf and I'll give you a few insights."

McIlroy will arguably have his best chance to win The Masters in 2024 for a number of years given he has walked away from his role on the PGA Tour policy board.

The Ulsterman's new tech-infused golf league (TGL) with Woods has also been delayed until 2025 after the stadium roof collapsed last week, meaning McIlroy will not have to worry quite so much about that part of his growing business portfolio just yet.

McIlroy's best result at The Masters was a solo second behind Scottie Scheffler in '22.

But McIlroy's best chance to win The Masters came in 2011 when he held a four-stroke lead heading into the back nine.

He went on to triple the 10th, bogey the 11th and double the 12th en route to a final-round 80 and T15.

McIlroy signed off with a lacklustre T22 at the DP World Tour Championship last week.

Despite that lowly finish, McIlroy did still etch his name on a fifth Race to Dubai title.

McIlroy was seen using the brand new TaylorMade Qi10 LS Driver for the first time.
