Johnston: "TGL's critics will soon have to eat their words"

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's TGL will ultimately prove to be a resounding success despite an up-and-down inaugural campaign.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods' TGL has received plenty of mixed reviews two months into its inaugural season.

Will it ultimately prove to be a success? Does it have the staying power its founders envision?

I say yes and yes.

Let me explain...

It's on TV at the perfect time

One of TGL's biggest strengths is its scheduling. Monday and Tuesday evenings in the winter and early spring provide an ideal window, particularly in the U.S., with no competition from the NFL or other major sports. This strategic timing maximises visibility and engagement.

The players, for the most part, really are buying into it

A crucial factor in TGL's success is the enthusiasm of top-tier players. For instance, Tony Finau signed a one-match contract and immediately became an electric presence for LAGC, bringing energy from his opening dance to his seamless chemistry with teammates Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa.

Had a lower-ranked player filled in instead, it might have signalled waning interest from PGA Tour stars. Instead, Finau's participation—and evident enjoyment—demonstrates that elite players are eager to support TGL, even for short-term commitments.

Beyond those directly involved, other players are showing interest. LIV's Brooks Koepka attended his first TGL match, joking around with Max Homa and the Jupiter Links players. His presence—along with former world number one Jason Day, who also attended a match—reinforces the league's credibility and appeal.

There is team loyalty

Another promising sign is the commitment of marquee players. Xander Schauffele, despite nursing a rib injury, showed up to support his NYGC team, proving his dedication even during a tough season. Likewise, stars like Jordan Spieth have expressed curiosity about TGL, with Spieth discussing it recently on The Smylie Show.

TGL's long-term success depends not just on its biggest names but also on its supporting cast. Fortunately, players are stepping up both in competition and on social media. Justin Rose, for example, has been an active presence, helping teammates read putts and celebrating their successes. Even when absent, he remained engaged online when LAGC clinched a playoff spot.

Billy Horschel has embraced the team concept, bringing boundless energy and enthusiasm, while young talents like Tom Kim and Min Woo Lee add excitement with their reactions and clutch performances. Lee even set a TGL record with a 192 mph ball speed. Shane Lowry, known for his typically mild demeanour, has shown an animated side, further boosting the league’s entertainment value.

Ludvig Åberg has emerged as a standout, Wyndham Clark has surprised with his flair, and Justin Thomas continues to bring fiery passion—exactly what TGL needs to thrive.

TGL is overcoming growing pains

Of course, no new venture is without its challenges. There have been occasional technical glitches, like the misread of Tommy Fleetwood’s approach shot that landed 100 yards short of the target. Fortunately, such issues have been minimal.

Even unexpected miscommunications—such as Tiger Woods mistakenly hitting a shot 99 yards instead of 199 yards—have added to the entertainment factor. Banter between teams has been light-hearted and natural rather than forced, maintaining an authentic competitive atmosphere.

A few Champions Tour players recently told me that TGL competitors excel at being intense, high-level athletes first and foremost. They must continue embracing that competitive edge rather than forcing interactions that could take them out of their routines.

It really is unique

One of TGL’s most compelling aspects is how it brings top players together in an intimate setting. Unlike traditional tournaments where competitors are spread out over miles of course, TGL’s format fosters more interaction between stars like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The smaller, enclosed environment amplifies their personalities, making for a more engaging broadcast.

Going forward

As TGL continues to evolve, its ability to maintain player enthusiasm, refine its presentation, and capture fan interest will determine its long-term success. So far, the signs are overwhelmingly positive. If the league keeps delivering excitement while fine-tuning its approach, it has a strong chance of becoming a mainstay in the golf world.
