Great Britain and Ireland lead Continental Europe by two points after day one of the Ryder Cup warm-up event in Abu Dhabi.

The three day competition is a chance to give European skipper Luke Donald the chance to assess his options ahead of the showdown against Team USA in September at Bethpage Black.

Great Britain and Ireland are captained this year by England's Justin Rose while former Open champion Francesco Molinari is charge of Continental Europe.

Day one saw five match foursomes matches played, with Continental Europe only picking up 1½ points to Great Britain & Ireland's 3½.

Golfers were subjected to chants of 'U-S-A, U-S-A' on the PA system on the first tee to try and replicate the expected hostile atmosphere on the outskirts of New York at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

Tyrell Hatton was paired with young Irish star Tom McKibbin, who was been linked with a move to Jon Rahm's LIV Golf team.

Rose insisted it was by coincidence that they were partners.

The duo formed a good partnership and comfortably defeated Antoine Rozner and Julien Guerrier 3&2.

The English pairing of Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai comfortably saw off Molinari and Matteo Manassero 4&2.

Thorbjorn Olesen and Niklas Norgaard tied their match with Matthew Jordan and Paul Waring.

Matthieu Pavon and Romain Langasque were defeated 3&1 by Rose and Matthew Wallace.

While Rasmus Hojgaard and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen lost to Jordan Smith and Laurie Canter on the final hole.

The players will play two sessions of foursomes tomorrow and one session of singles on Sunday.

Every player will take part in all four of the sessions.

There are 25 points available and the team that reaches the 13 point mark first lifts the trophy.

The previous edition of the tournament saw Francesco Molinari's Continental Europe defeat Fleetwood's Great Britan and Ireland's by four points.

Rose was pleased with his side's performance on day one.

He said: "I don't think I'm having to hide anybody or come up with a plan for anybody or sort of like try to find one strong guy to kind of prop somebody else up. I really feel like everybody on the team is in good form.

"Obviously foursomes tomorrow, different format, different style of golf, probably one of my favourite styles of golf. It's tricky.

"So hopefully we can kind of keep the momentum up tomorrow but yeah for my decision-making point of view, I'm very happy."

GolfMagic will publish the full results here.
