Former LIV Golf pro confirms PGA Tour decision: "I don't think I'll get spat at"

Laurie Canter, who has played LIV Golf events, will become the first player to tee it up at an official PGA Tour event since the golf wars began.

Laurie Canter has confirmed he has been given the green light to become the first former LIV pro to compete in an official PGA Tour event since the golf wars began.

Canter had the opportunity at last week's South African Open to earn his spot into the 2025 Masters Tournament and the flagship Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass via his world ranking.

The Englishman ultimately came up short in securing a spot in the field for the first major of the year after losing to home favourite Dylan Naidoo on the first extra hole at Durban Country Club.

But the silver lining was that he secured his place at next week's flagship, $4.5m event at Ponte Vedra.

Canter, 35, joked to Telegraph Sport that he doesn't believe he will be 'spat at' given his ties to the breakaway tour.

"The way I'm looking is pretty simple," he told the paper.

"I've already played on eight or nine professional Tours around the world, so this will be my first chance to have a go on the PGA Tour

"I do accept the LIV angle, and if anything, I hope this shows, in a very, very small way within this whole saga, that maybe players can come back together in a few different events, other than the majors."

Canter said his entry was confirmed on Monday morning.

He was previously hit with a one-year ban from PGA Tour events despite never holding membership on the circuit.

The rule was introduced in early 2023 and was widely viewed as a way to discourage players to join the PIF-backed circuit.

Canter previously hit out at that decision, describing the policy as 'absurd'.

Still, it doesn't appear that he holds any grudges now.

And he described his time with LIV Golf as an 'amazing experience'.

"The money I earned was life-changing," he said.

"I am a pro, this is my job, and with two young children, I’ll fully admit that was incredibly important to me."

Canter could still play his way into the 2025 Masters field

And a rookie Ryder Cup appearance this September at Bethpage Black also isn't out of the question.

"The Ryder Cup is the event everyone wants to play in," he said.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself, but getting into the big weeks is huge because I want to be exposed and find out how good I am.

"The Players is one of these."
