Key Features:

  • Improved forged feel: individual head optimisation and modal analysis tools paired with SpeedFoam™ Air create best in class forged feel with an explosive sensation at impact.
  • More speed, more consistently: the 2025 P790 debuts an all new ultra high strength, high speed forged face material (4340M) that is 20% stronger than previous generations
  • Increased distance with improved casting: a faster 4340M face, individual head optimisation and FLTD CG™ for precise centre of gravity (CG) positioning generates increased carry distances with optimal launch andspin windows for better gapping through the set.
  • FLTD CG: new for 2025, an even lower CG in the long irons enhances launch and playability, while a higher CG is designed to improve spin rates and control in the scoring clubs.
  • Shaped for elegant performance: the all new P·790 has been upgraded with a thinner topline for a cleaner look in the playing position, and an increased sole radius with progressive leading edge designed for consistent turf interaction and an improved impact location.

The TaylorMade P790 has dominated the players’ distance iron category since its 2017 debut, and now the 2025 model is here. So, what’s changed? And more importantly, is it still the king of distance and forgiveness?

GolfMagic had the chance to put the new P790 through its paces at Foresight HQ, testing everything from feel and distance control to forgiveness and ball flight consistency.

TaylorMade claims this new model features a 24% larger sweet spot, a refined premium look, and a brand-new face material.

In our eyes, the TaylorMade P790 has always been the iron equivalent of an iPhone—every time a new version is released, it flies off the shelves.

But is this the best P790 yet?

Let’s dive in and find out whether it's one of the Best Players Distance Irons of 2025

Who Is the TaylorMade P790 (2025) For?

TaylorMade has traditionally marketed the P790 to golfers with a 0-15 handicap, but based on our testing, players as far up to a 25 handicap could benefit from these irons—if fitted properly.

  • Lower handicappers (0-5): Could use the long irons as a driving iron or combo set with P770s.
  • Mid-handicappers (5-15): A fantastic balance of playability, forgiveness, and distance.
  • Higher handicappers (15-25): If you strike the ball well but need help on mis-hits, these could be a good option.

If you’re playing off a much higher handicap, however, we would strongly recommend you take a look at a selection of the best game improvement golf irons, including the TaylorMade Qi Irons

First Impressions – A Sleek New Look

One of the first things that stood out to us was how premium these irons look. TaylorMade has refined the design to make it cleaner and more compact, with the logo now centred on the back of the clubhead—a P770-esque aesthetic that makes them ideal for a combo set.

The topline is sleek and the offset is subtle, making them confidence-inspiring without looking chunky. The shorter irons also feature a more beveled leading edge, which should improve turf interaction.

Performance & Testing – How Does It Play?

We tested the 7-iron and 4-iron under controlled conditions at Foresight HQ, measuring key metrics like ball speed, spin rate, carry distance, and dispersion.

7-Iron Testing & Numbers

Ball Speed

Spin Rate

Carry Distance

135 mph

6,400 RPM

192 yards

Those numbers are very solid for a players' distance iron—optimised for our swing and comparable to previous models.

Forgiveness Test

To test forgiveness, we deliberately hit shots off the toe, and the results were impressive:

  • Spin stayed at 6,000 RPM—which means the ball wasn’t dropping out of the sky.
  • Ball speed only dropped by 7 mph—a 6% reduction, but still carrying well.

This suggests that TaylorMade’s claims about a larger sweet spot are valid.

Feel & Sound – A Noticeable Change

This is where opinions may differ.

The new face material makes the P790 feel thinner and more explosive, giving it a slightly more metallic sensation at impact.

Compared to the 2023 model, it’s a firmer strike. If you like a softer, forged feel, you might prefer the older version.

For me, the P790 still retains its hollow-body DNA, but if we had to compare it to another iron, we'd say it has a metallic, lively feel similar to the Callaway Apex TCB Titanium.

Distance Control & Consistency

A common misconception about the P790 is that it’s just a "hot" iron with inconsistent distances. This was true back in 2017, but the 2025 model tells a different story.

Looking at our test shots, the carry variance was just 12 yards—between 191 and 203 yards.

Carry Variance

Dispersion (Front-to-Back)

12 yards

30 feet

That’s exceptional for a hollow-body iron, proving that TaylorMade has worked hard on distance control.

Even when we mis-hit shots, they weren’t flying too long or too short—a key upgrade over past P790s.

4-Iron Testing – A Fairway Finder?

At address, the 4-iron looks compact, with some offset, but a shorter heel-to-toe length.

Some may find it slightly intimidating, but the forgiveness is there.

4-Iron Testing & Numbers

Ball Speed

Spin Rate

Carry Distance

150 mph

4,000 RPM

235 yards

Even on a low heel strike, the spin only increased by 400 rpm, meaning there wasn’t an extreme loss of performance.

For US , this club is a perfect fairway finder.

Should You Buy the TaylorMade P790 (2025)?

If you’re looking for a players’ distance iron that blends power, forgiveness, and control, the P790 (2025) is one of the best on the market.

✅ Buy it if:
✔️ You want improved forgiveness without sacrificing a clean, premium look.
✔️ You need consistent spin and launch across the face.
✔️ You like a compact yet playable players’ distance iron.

❌ Skip it if:
❌ You prefer a softer feel—the 2023 model might suit you better.
❌ You’re looking for a true forged players’ iron—consider the P7MC or P7MB.

Verdict – Is This the Best P790 Yet?

The TaylorMade P790 (2025) is undoubtedly an upgrade over previous versions, particularly in sweet spot size, forgiveness, and consistency.

While feel is subjective, the performance gains are clear—spin retention, ball speed consistency, and distance control are all improved.

For golfers who want forgiveness in a premium package, the P790 remains one of the best players’ distance irons money can buy.
