Jon Rahm believes golf legend can make 2025 Ryder Cup team: "He's still that good..."

Jon Rahm sings the praises of his Spanish idol and Ryder Cup record points scorer Sergio Garcia with nine months to go until the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.

Jon Rahm believes one of his golfing idols Sergio Garcia still has what it takes to be able to compete in Luke Donald's 2025 European Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black this September.

Rahm, 30, made his feelings about Garcia be known as he sat in front of reporters ahead of his first appearance at the Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour this week.

Garcia, 45, is the record points scorer at the Ryder Cup having amassed a whopping 28.5 over nine appearances.

He made his debut in 1999 and has played a total of 49 matches.

The LIV Golf star has now paid off his fines on the DP World Tour and as a result he is able to return compete on the circuit he has won on 16 times.

While it might be something of an impossible task for Garcia to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team automatically this September given LIV Golf events remain shut out of receiving valuable ranking points, there is hope he can haul himself into contention for one of Donald's six captain's picks.

Garcia is only expected to play in a handful of DP World Tour events this season and other than The Masters - where is already exempt as a past champion - the Spaniard will need to qualify for the other three majors or be fortunate enough to receive a special exemption.

When pressed by a reporter as to whether Garcia could make a 10th European Ryder Cup team later this year, Rahm nodded in approval.

"Yeah. I mean, for people that see him any given day, Sergio Garcia can a can hit it tee-to-green better than anybody on the planet," said Rahm.

"It's that simple. He's still that good and he's still very valuable.

"Right, I understand the change in circumstances. I get it. But at the end of the day, being Spanish and a friend and a mentor, I'm obviously going to be biassed towards him. And I would love to see him in that team room but who knows what's going to happen.

"I also understand we did an incredible job in that last Ryder Cup having a newer team and coming together and performing the way we did.

"So I hope, I believe that there's a place for Sergio in there. I think there will be a place for Sergio on the Ryder Cup any given time. It's just a matter of time now is letting the clubs do the talking."

The Telegraph reported last week that Garcia will not be able to captain the European Ryder Cup team in the future due to a certain rule.

The DP World Tour has not confirmed whether that is indeed true or not.

Garcia last week confirmed the final member of his Fireballs GC for the 2025 LIV Golf League season, which starts up in Saudi Arabia from 6-8 February.
