Wyndham Clark admits he would like to see just 100 players competing on the PGA Tour with a new relegation system in place.

Clark, 30, made his feelings be known about the PGA Tour after clearing up cheating claims on the 18th hole in the third round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The reigning US Open champion was questioned over whether he had moved his golf ball in the deep rough with his iron.

Clark cleared things up after the round when saying: "I'm not cheating or anything like that or trying to improve my lie."

Clark went on to bogey the par-4 18th to fall one shot out of the lead on 8-under par.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Ireland's Shane Lowry are out in front on 9-under par.

Clark was then pressed by reporters as to what he made of Rory McIlroy's suggestion of fewer players on the PGA Tour.

The American is all for it, but would also like to see a relegation system in place.

Clark told the media:

"I think it would be amazing if our Tour was 100 guys, and I kind of said this a few times, a 100 guys and we have 20 guys that get relegated every time, every year, doesn't matter who you are. It would be exciting. Because you come down to the end of the year, people are looking who is going to win the FedExCup, and then you're looking at who is not going to be here next year. So, yeah, I'm probably with Rory on that. I don't know what that number is, but I think it's just nice to elevate the product and make it to where the best players are playing on TV more often and against each other."

In terms of what tournaments could look like on the PGA Tour, Clark added:

"I think a 100-man field and then we would still have maybe a little bit bigger of a cut. It would be simple, because you know these 100 guys have a card and, no matter what, they're playing in the events and there's no, you know, this guy gets in or whatever sponsor invites. I think it would just be really easy. Then, if you lose your card, you go down to the next one, and vice versa. So, I don't know. I think that seems like an easy simple plan, but like I said, above my pay grade."

DP World Tour pro Richard Mansell is certainly not convinced by Clark's comments.

Mansell tweeted:

"Good job they didn’t do this when you were finishing outside 100 on the PGA Tour not very long ago. Closed shop idea is a terrible one. Remember where you came from. There’s a lot of good players waiting to breakthrough."
